I had a discussion with Pope today about genetically altered food and government potential (read: willingness) to create situations where they use Terminator plant seeds (seeds that poison their own daughter cells so as not to reproduce). Pharmaceutical companies are pairing with pesticide companies then pairing with seed companies that pair with ( Read more... )

Why is genetically modified food bad?! I say bring it in, I have no issues with it - let's say it presents a 0.001% greater chance of cancer or whatever... we expose ourselves to much much greater possibilities of illness etc. via our continued drinking, smoking, eating food stuffed with saturated fats etc. etc. etc. If GM food makes it easier to feed the world then GREAT! If it does so with an almost negligible (but not quite negligible) health risk then why do we care considering our lifestyles expose us to much greater risks...

i wasn't really meaning to imply that there are catastrophic health issues. sure, lab rats came out with weaker immune systems...whatever. even too much oxygen will flip your nonsense.

it's the political aspect that's frightening. making the entire agricultural world a monopoly is unsettling. i guess that didn't come across?

Yes it did, it was very well written in fact but I don't find it frightening, or rather I do but know that's just the way things go and thus decide to concern myself with whether that which THEY are intending to do is going to be harmful or not... conglomerates, not governments rule the world IMO... not sure which is worse...

they grow genetically altered corn down the street from me here. as a matter of fact they have a field of dreams style baseball field set up in one of them, which presents an interesting image from the perspective of your post.

I've heard it said (i do not know for sure) that the terminator seed plants are actually environmentally healthy because you plow under the field after every harvest before replanting, which while it creates a monopoly on food, keeps the nitrogen levels of the soil up and can hopefully minimize the need for further deforestation.
