warning! speculation ahead, almost certainly based on my own biases: i think most people are given no compelling reason to live their lives and essentially sleepwalk through the whole damned thing in misery. having children probably really is the best thing most people do -- it seems to give them a feeling of importance in their activities that they are not likely to get from any other source. that they would consequently defend the only worthwhile source of meaning in their lives should come as no surprise. maybe you're one of the lucky few with something else to do.
