I seem to be the only person who has submitted an elevator pitch for the Semantic Web, yet, so they featured my video:

I confess I lost interest in the whole semweb thing years ago when it seemed to get bogged down in endless debates about language and logic and re-inventing FOPL or at least Prolog.

I happen to think your pitch is wrong, though. What prevents me from sharing my Facebook pictures with you now is not some lack of the semantic web but the policies of Facebook. Inventing a new technology won't magically change those (or other corporate/institutionally misguded) policies.

I don't know that facebook will ever want to open up, being the leader, but my hypothesis is that most everyone else will happily cooperate with each other in order to take down that leader. And to do that, they need more than policies; they need technology.

If that works, facebook will eventually adopt it, as when Microsoft finally saw the light with the Internet and the Web.

(I don't think facebook will be that recalcitrant, though; my sense is that their mission is not to rule the world but to connect the world, and I think they too realized they need to use decentralized technologies to do that, because some people will never buy into something controlled by some american company.)
