I don't think you'll need to use actual pound cake, but it would probably need to be a fairly dense cake, or it might fall apart. Do they give good instructions about how to construct it? That does look pretty tough for a beginner cake - you could always do something 2-D if you chicken out (just make a large sheet cake and cut into the shape of a cat).
They do give pretty specific instructions about how to construct it, and maybe this is my naivete speaking, but it seems like I could do it. Maybe I'll try to do it, and if it is a disaster, I can do the 2-D?
I'm also wondering about icing....it seems pretty obvious to me that I can do chocolate and lemon flavors, and that gives me two colors, but the other (third) color that I usually use is a sort of dark-pink, wine color, using cranberry concentrate. (Of course, I say "usually" meaning that I use it for Christmas cookies....I've never actually tried to do much other than chocolate for cake icing before....I'm hoping that it would be OK. Probably I'd better do some test runs.) Do you think a white/brown/pink calico kitty would look ridiculous? Or....maybe I should just limit myself to lemon (white) and chocolate (brown). I could do a tabby with chocolate and reallyrealy chocolate.
Or maybe I'm being totally unrealistic and I'm just going to end up making a big sugary mess!
that's super cute. my mom did a train cake once when I was little. or my grandma. not sure how really deserves credit. anyway, I remember lots of toothpicks being used as...scaffolding.
I saw one of your answers up above - no food coloring in greece?
