Stupid new law about used children's clothes???!

A friend of mine (Kristin!) sent me an email yesterday that has me raging, absolutely raging.  I was going to paraphrase what she wrote, but I think I'm just going to copy and paste ( Read more... )

I think it was Thursday that they amended the law so it does not include resale. So consignment shops, thrift stores, selling on eBay, etc is all allowed.

I think the law was intended to get manufacturers to be more responsible, but it was just poorly written. It has a lot of people all up in arms. One example is people saying that library books would have to be tested or removed. Seriously I do not see libraries removing all children's books from their shelves. I'm sure there are more clarifications to come.

I *think* this law has been clarified due to public outcry and there is no longer an issue selling used items one at a time.

I read the link above. Confusing wording, isn't it? It seems to state first that it will be illegal to sell anything over the limit of lead, even if the item was manufactured before 2009 (in other words, used stuff) but then later it does say specifically that used sellers do not have to ensure that the items meet the new standards (in other words can unknowingly break the aforementioned law?) Law is so weird. Anyway, if people are trying to get that clarified so that the used children's clothing business does not go under all over the US, that is wonderful. I'm glad there was such outcry and uproar! Go Moms (and business owners, I'm sure!)

Is there maybe yet some hope for Other Mothers, then? I really really hope so. When was it that you heard that they were shutting down? Hopefully prior to the amendment on Thursday, so that maybe things have changed for them?

Last thing I saw regarding that was on 1/8 - they were saying the release from the CPSC was a *press release*, not an amendment, and "continue spreading and signing petitions, contacting congress, etc. because it's not over yet." ???
