Southwestern college is a shithole. Beleive me. (I'm sure this will induce lots of, 'how so?' questions, but there would be too much to explain, it's THAT bad.)
I think it's a fantastic idea, but I do worry about all of you since the cost of living is so high here. You'd probably need room-mates.
But I do have a few tidbits on housing. Supposedly there's some low-income apartments that've opened over where Tristan used to live. His mother quoted something like 650/month for a 2-bedroom. The other option for low-priced rent is at an apartment complex across from the chula vista mall - it's about 720/month + utilities for a 1 bedroom.
You think it'd be possible to work out some kind of rent with tyour grandmother at the house? I'm not sure how many bedrooms it has, but that's always another option. Family is family.
we've looked into a lot of things. actually, we've determined that the cost of living, though higher, is not so significant as it appears. the minimum wage for example is higher, as is the average wage. believe it or not, our car insurance costs will go down, despite our expectations.
I think room mates would help, financially, but we're a family, with a four year old. it'd be REALLY hard to find roomates that 1) we'd trust being around our kid like that, and 2) wouldn't mind sharing a home with a family like ours.
perhaps you and tristan would, but that's the only ones I can think of.

I'm not gonna ask you to explain how... not right now.
Any community colleges that are decent down there?
