I got turned down by the free Army program when I was in. My prescription was (and is) so high that they have to zap away so much of my cornea, the remainder would be thinner by a hair than their safety margins considered acceptable. So I went home empty handed. I still hope for some correction in the future. I've been wearing contacts for 20 years, but would not mind giving them up. I have hopes for alternative methods, such as the corneal implant, where they permanently insert a lens into the front of your eye. Good luck?
