Dark City vs Matrix

Hmm...I feel pretty strongly this article has the right idea about the Matrix being a derivative or inferior clone to Dark City. I'm researching Dark City because I'd like to make a Stranger costume for Halloween.

The only "saving grace" is that Matrix script was written almost 10 years before Dark City came out. Otherwise, yeah, it would probably have been considered a rip-off.
On a similar note, I think it's a rather strange quirk in our collective psyche that we come out with similar movies at around the same time, even when working independently. Perfect example was all those end of the world meteor strikes movies. All somewhat different, but with the same general idea. Like Matrix/Dark City/13th Floor.

Someone made a nice point on my FA post of this. Scripts get shopped around to different studios and you come out with the same story that's ignored the first time around but because a competing studio shows interest in it they try make the movie before them and steal the interest.
