Meta: Obsessing over my obsessions

So here's the thing: Like many of us who join fandoms, I don't just watch and like something, well, I mean, I do, but those don't count. The ones that count, the ones that matter, are the characters that touch me emotionally. Or gut me, whatever. And then not only do I obsess over the characters/show/film (but really, mostly characters) but I start ( Read more... )

Yep! It's the intensity. I'm a sucker for that over-the-top loyalty. It's very gratifying to watch/read. Thanks for urging me to post :)

Great comparison! There is a lot to be said for soulless!Sam or demon!Dean having similarities to mind-wiped Winter Soldier Bucky. I'm also thinking that Bucky remembering Steve and the end of the line comment is very much like Sam's memories of his life with Dean helping him to get control of Lucifer. In both cases, Dean and Steve endure a beating until Bucky and Sam remember. Bucky and Steve are the first characters I've shipped since finding Sam and Dean. I didn't really think about the reasons why until I saw your post and it makes so much sense now. I guess I have a type. 8-)

Yes. Exactly. The ending scene in Cap 2 where Bucky freezes before giving Steve what would have been a final blow struck me immediately as similar to Sam freezing when he was possessed with Lucifer and suddenly coming back to himself. Also, the general theme of 'sacrifice' rings similar between both sets of characters.

Steve and Bucky are also the first noncanon pairing, I've shipped intensely in quite a while. Ironically, I don't ship Sam and Dean romantically but I adore their brotherhood to pieces and do think that it's more than a typical sibling relationship. It's the more that gets to me -- the loyalty and devotion. (And I do adore J2 fanfic :) )

I think the notion of redemption is another that permeates both sets of characters -- especially Bucky, who now (I hope) is on a redemption arc. Both Sam and Dean have pursued redemption jointly and apart as the series goes on.
