Depeding on where in Canada you are, you're probably talking about a wolf spider (there are actually about 2000 species of wolf spider - it's a general term for ground-dwelling, hunting spiders).

There was a type of wolf spider that loved to hang out on the dock when I life-guarded at at local lake in college (the dock was of the floating-type where you pulled it onto shore when not in use and was anchored by a few cinderblocks when in use). One day, the guards (about 7 of us) took the dock out for a rescue drill. As the water splashed up under the dock, the spider ran to the top of the dock. The people on the beach never saw 7 guards dive off the dock so fast - some actually thought that was part of the drill until they heard us screaming and swatting at the spider as it ran on top of the water at us.
