Perhaps some of you have heard of Asperger Syndrome. It's a condition which causes the victim to be unable to pick up on normal emotional and social cues (among other things), which makes interacting with people and society very difficult. I read something very similar to that before and it was really enlightening. Also, as a "side bonus" I suppose, it helped me interact better with animals insofar as that many seem to function similarly to autistic humans. It was a lot easier to deal with and understand Bongo after reading about autism; before, he would get really upset sometimes when he was touched, or he would just completely freeze if we took him into a new environment. Before I knew better I would just try to coax him out of it, but that just scared him more and I didn't know what to do. Now that I have some idea of why he does that, I know just to be patient with him instead.
