Signal Boost on an important issue

May 20, 2010 09:34

I yoinked this graphic from smirnoffmule because I don't really know how to approach people who warn for slash directly (er, and tactfully - my tact-o-meter isn't so good when i'm sleepy, and I'm perpetually sleepy these days). However, it's an important issue, and I think this graphic kind of covers the full range of idiocy one encounters on the issue of ( Read more... )

I will warn for explicit sex/violence/noncon, but not slash vs het. Mostly so that folks know it's NSFW. Not that it matters much, because (a) I hardly write anything anymore (b) anybody who's read my stuff knows that I write grownup things for grownups (that may or may not involve sex).

I will also warn for muppet crack.

As you should.

Hey did you know there's a porn battle at Foxy's, weekend after next? One of the prompts is "water." You know you want to...

i think, is polite to warn about the rating or some sensitive topic, and for the record i'm 30 and i do not care about ratings, i'm straight but i really really like slash, i'm do not mind gay, het, etc. and off the record i think i'm reading to much slash, because i seeing slash parings in a lot of places like John Gilbert and Damon salvatore they look hot together

Thank you. I was beginning to believe I was too touchy. Well, I probably am, but at least not about this particular thing :P

Few things bother me more than the "BINGO CARD" approach to disputes. It's both ugly and pointless. It explains nothing, it argues nothing, it asks nothing, and yet people display them proudly with nothing to be proud of.

Why display the competition's arguments? You don't agree with them! Display your own instead!

It doesn't make any seeeeeeeeeenseeee.

I find them very useful, myself. Most of the time, the 'bingo' formats contain a mix of obviously offensive statements and some that I have to think about why they might be offensive. Thought is good.

But people using bad arguments and defenses don't think their arguments are bad. Since the bingo card meme has an element of teasing to it, bingo cards are likely to keep the folks they refute from listening -- at least, they're less likely to change someone's mind than simply talking to them would be. So what I mean is, I think the bingo card defeats the purpose of its creator.

At the same time, I might be reading a combative element to it that isn't there, or isn't intended.

I think very often the people who are trotting out those same derailing arguments are not the direct target audience, since they're not likely to be listening anyway (which is often the source of said bingo card maker's frustration in the first place). More, they form part of a wider fandom conversation, and are quite accessible for people who are prepared to engage, want to learn more about how derailing works, or who maybe aren't clear on how to start making counter-arguments ( ... )

I agree with duikermeisie. I will warn along the scale of explicit-ness, but not for who's doing who, gender or sex-wise. I mean, really. If the readers know the fandom, they know. If not, they're sort of taking a chance anyway. I'd rather see warnings about specifics, and to my mind, gender and sex are way too broad to be specifics.
