A MAN lay down in the middle of a highway in Western Australia because he thought it was the best way to get someone to stop and give him a lift after his car broke down.
But he has been reprimanded by police, who called him an idiot.
Police say a woman driving home with two young children spotted what appeared to be a man's dead body on the South Coast Highway, about 60km west of Esperance, at about 2am (WST) last Sunday morning.
"She has seen the body lying in the middle of the road and slowed down. But she wasn't game to stop because she was with two small kids and she was frightened," Detective Sergeant Doug Backhouse said.
"And the body didn't move as she drove around it."

When the woman reached home, she called St John's Ambulance. They contacted police who raced to the scene and found the middle-aged man, from south-west WA, very much alive.
"He said he was lying on the road because he thought that was the best way to get a car to stop to give him a lift," said Det Sgt Backhouse.
The police gave the man a warning and a severe reprimand.
"We told him to pull his head in, otherwise it might get squashed next time you try something like that," said Det Sgt Backhouse.
The sergeant said a detective had even been brought back on duty because it was thought it might be a murder case.
"It was a total waste of resources because of one idiot's stupidity," he said.
