Republicans get a huge amount of their support from American fundamentalists (who make up something like one third of the population). Fundamentalists believe that the rapture is coming, and there's nothing we can do at this point to avert catastrophe on the earthly plane, but it doesn't matter, because when the rapture comes, they, the believers, will be blessed with eternal life in paradise. Bush is a fundamentalist, and I believe this makes him much more dangerous than your average oil man. However, there are other more moderate Christians, including, ironically, most Catholics, who do not believe that the rapture is coming, and therefore actually care about improving the current situation.
I'm curious, was this speech given at one of the older, more established--and more moderate--Christian schools like Baylor, or was it at one of the new fundamentalists institutions like Bob Jones University?
And then there is a sect out there that believes that the rapture will come when the world is destroyed so wrecking everything like the environment is good. I'm not sure if that is just rumour or not. >

I am far more concerned by the the mass confusion that results in presidents like George W. Bush being elected.
