(In which Starscream explains the fundamental theory of spark growth.)

Skywarp looked up from his observation of Rumble and Frenzy - ‘Primus the identical scowls on those little faces are adorable.’ - to see how his wingmates were doing. Thundercracker had lucked out. Buzzsaw and Laserbeak were being reasonable about the situation and had accepted that imprinting had happened while they were adjusting to the new shells. Both were now perched on the dark blue Seeker’s shoulders, one arm each wrapped around a shoulder-vent in mirrored poses. Ravage was still out, having just finished his upgrade a few breems hence, and Starscream’s energy field was almost visible in an attempt to ease the integration of spark and shell. Ratbat was hanging over Starscream’s arm as he watched the flightless Seekerlet shell mould itself around his eldest brother’s spark. Although the twin’s transfer had been tricky in that they had to be done simultaneously, Ravage’s had been the most difficult.

‘It’s only the fact that Ravage needs the support of Screamer’s energy field right now that’s keeping them from grabbing their siblings and bolting.’ Skywarp figured, ‘And of course, any other reasons they may have they ain’t gonna admit to.’

The black Seeker’s optics barely flickered at the cautious shifting beside him, but a grin began to grow on his face. New body-shells itched. Mature sparks adapted faster, so the period of discomfort was negligible, usually over by the time the medic finished packing up his tools. Immature sparks on the other hand, well, they took a fair bit longer to adapt. Skywarp wagered that Rumble and Frenzy would relent any megaclick now.

Newsparks needed the comfort granted by the support of an adult spark to properly integrate into their protoforms the first time. It prevented glitches and just made the process overall more bearable for the little sparks. Older sparklings did not need the support, barring extreme circumstances, but they did better during the process when they did have it.

A heavy sigh made Skywarp’s grin grow larger and he slid his gaze to the side. Frenzy looked at him woefully and Rumble scowled at him crankily. The wingpanels on their backs twitched and jumped in obvious discomfort.

“Something I can do for ya, winglets?” Skywarp asked pleasantly, swinging his thrusters as he settled more comfortably in his seat.

“Just shut up.” Rumble grumped, but followed his twin when Frenzy set his jaw and climbed into Skywarp’s lap.

With a twin seated on each leg, Skywarp chuckled and extended his field amused by the way the little mechs jumped. Then they seemed to melt as his energy evened out the discordance between their new shells and sparks that were used to different bodies.

“So!” Skywarp said brightly, curling his claws in and rubbing along the twins back struts, right between the wingpanels and making the twins slump further, systems purring at the nice new feeling, “What’re ya working on Screamer?”

“Transformation adaptation blueprints for the sparkling shells.” Starscream responded absently, nudging Ratbat back up as the youngest sparkling started to slip down, “If you’re going to perch winglet, use your magnet and anit-grav systems so you don’t fall.”

Ratbat just started at Starscream, put off centre by the unheard-of kindness in the normally caustic voice. Without the angry, stress-out screech that always seemed to underline Starscream’s public speech, in private the Air Commander had a voice like crushed velvet. The smoky, soft tone was remarkably soothing to the distressed Cassettacons.

With a sharp blink, Ratbat nodded, his precarious perch growing more stable, “Okay.”

Thundercracker shifted carefully, “I was under the impression that sparklings couldn’t have alt-modes.”

“Hey, yeah!” Skywarp piped up, “Something about power levels and processor ability, right?”

“What, do I need to give a class on basic anatomy and sparkling care now?” Starscream looked up slowly at the ringing silence that greeted his words. The white Seeker was the focus of several attentive gazes. Starscream groaned, shuttering his optics as he prayed for patience, “I’m surrounded by idiots.”

“Be nice Screamer.” Skywarp chided playfully, well aware that his wingleader was so deep in nesting protocols that he was about to start clucking. It would not take much to convince him, “Explanations please! You know how much we love the sound of your voice!”

Rumble and Frenzy exchanged a wary look. Frighteningly enough, Skywarp had not been being sarcastic with that last sentence. But they had to admit, if only between the two of them, that it was an understandable sentiment if Starscream always sounded like that in private.

“I’m pretty sure that the sparklings wouldn’t mind understanding what’s going on with them either.” Thundercracker put in, making Starscream sigh in resignation.

“Oh very well, but you had all better pay attention!” Starscream levelled a warning glare at his audience before flicking his wings, gathering his thoughts, and beginning to speak, “To understand sparkling development you first have to understand the nature of sparks. Sparks that come from Vector Sigma are full grown, and suited to the provided shell. The sparks of sparklings are different. Where Vector Sigma will produce random strings of core coding in a hit-or-miss manner, a sparkling gets its core codes from its creators - however many of them it may have. Your core codes form the basis of your personality, and are contained within the data crystals that form the innermost shell of your spark casing. Core codes cannot be altered by outside forces any more than the frequency of you spark can be changed. Any attempts to do so would result only in the spark extinguishing.”

The twins exchanged reluctantly impressed looks. Starscream knew what he was talking about, that much was obvious. Though it begged to question why, why would Starscream be interested in sparklings? It did not seem like a Starscream-ish field of interest. Laserbeak had that particular glint in his optic that meant he was recording. If nothing else, at least this weird, kinder Starscream was nice to listen to.

“Newsparks produced by self-splitting or a union between two or more fully mature sparks need time to grow.” Starscream was obviously getting into the explaining-thing if his arm gestures were anything to go by, “This is why sparkling shell are so small. A newspark’s energy field is not just small, but it is also thin. It cannot support more than basic systems and functions.”

“Is that why sparklets have such simple designs?” Skywarp asked with dawning realization.

“Yes. Imagine the energy field produced by your spark as a liquid.” Starscream frowned as he searched for the words to make the concept clear, “A sparkling has a very shallow field with a high rate of evaporation. Which is why they need to refuel regularly and frequently, it’s not just the small size of their tanks. As a sparkling grows the energy field deepens and thickens, like mist condensing into a puddle. This allows them to gradually run more systems. Shell size depends on the size of the field produced by the spark. The functions ands systems that can be run are dependant on the thickness of the field.”

“How does that work exactly?’ Thundercracker queried, “Are you saying that these six are small because that’s the size of their energy fields? How are they able to support transformation systems and weapons then?”

“A good question.” Starscream allowed, nodding at his wingmate, “Yes, they have shells that fit the size of their fields. You’ll notice that the new shells are larger than their old drone casings. It was the time they spent in the drone casings suppressing the growth of their spark field’s size that resulted in their fields thickening instead. At this point they are close to a mature sparks field density, though it would be on the lower end of the density spectrum. This allows them to transform and have at least basic built-in weapons systems. Though nothing too complex, so no cannons. Think of it this way using the liquid imagery, Reflector’s field density is the same as Devastator’s field density, but the sizes are different. Now Megatron’s field density is uncommonly thick, like gelatine rather than a liquid. It’s what allows him to use that monstrous cannon of his. We Seeker’s on the other hand, have lighter fields better likened to steam. Fast, agitated, with a preference for going up and explosive under pressure. This high field frequency is what makes so many of us turn out with special abilities, to the point that it is rare to find a Seeker without a Sigma power.”

“So…” Skywarp chewed his bottom lip, “What you’re saying that that instead of mist like normal sparklings, they’ve got puddles and steam power like if they were full grown, but they’ve only got bitlet sized amounts of it.”

“A masterful summary, Skywarp.” Starscream said dryly, “Now that you understand the situation, would anyone care to offer suggestions as to the scraplet’s system alterations?”

“Piledrivers!” The twins yelled, jumping up in Skywarp’s lap, “We want our piledrivers back!”

“Very well.” Starscream pressed a few keys and the holographic display in the centre of the room lit up with schematics of all six Cassettacons. Rumble and Frenzy’s designs lit up as the piledrivers were added, “Anyone else?”

“Bombs?” Ratbat chirped shyly, ducking his head when Starscream looked at him.

“Of course.” Starscream added cluster bombs to Ratbat’s display, and then to Laserbeak and Buzzsaw’s after a quick glance at the other flyers, “Cluster bombs, lasers, and basic air to surface missiles. I’ve kept the designs close to the ones you’re used to. Now, any preferences as to alt modes?”

“Ethian’s for these two.” Skywarp grinned as Rumble and Frenzy exchanged questioning looks.

“Suits them.” Thundercracker remarked and paused to think, “A Zephyr for Laserbeak and Euros for Buzzsaw.”

“Good choices.” Starscream said, entering the data, “I’ll put Ravage in a Zephyros, and Ratbat will do well in a Euroclydon I think.”

“An Euroclydon?” Thundercracker grinned teasingly, “Showing off Screamer?”

“Feh. Like you aren’t doing the same with yours?” Starscream turned his head away from Thundercracker, “I’ll choose what best suits.”

“Whatever you say Screamer!” Skywarp laughed knowingly.

“Oh shut up and put them in the CR-chamber you disrespectful lout.” Starscream growled playfully as he stood up to do just that, “Ravage is stable enough now.”

As always his wingmates followed his lead. Before they rightly knew what was going on, the Cassettacons found themselves plopped into CR-chambers and going into forced recharge as the alterations began on their structures.

So you know, to the Seekers there are obvious differences between each of these models. But to outsiders they all look the same. Like how to the average person, all Siamese cats look the same, but to an Breeder, they're all very different.

Starscream figured that since I'm just a lowly fleshling that I should have a reference guide. All of the different Seeker models are basic function types, and I named translated them into Greek and Mediterranean winds for the most part.

So does anyone else out there in Internets-land drink the Fanta brand soda? It was on sale the other day so I bought some. I've since noticed that the Blue Raspberry is exactly the same color as windshield washer fluid. Or if you're a total geek like me, raw energon crytals. And the Cream Soda? A very nice electric pink that resembles processed energon. I, um, kinda really want a cube shaped drinking glass now.
