Sounds like a far more rigorous math program then our K :) Though L gets some similar concepts at the Engaging Math (which animals are in the square but not in the circle, in both circle and square, etc.)
I am pretty sure it was part of the language program, rather than "math". I also found out that they do have sort of a "gifted child" program, officially from Grade 4, but they do special activities with younger kids as well - which my L. summarily rejects, out of the goodness of her character. ;)
Oj! BTW, do you guys have reading groups yet? I've been promised the "unofficial ones" since November, but I think we'll still have to wait for "official ones" in February. For now, they are still doing "literacy assessments". By "literacy specialists", of course, because you wouldn't expect a K teacher from the most expensive freaking school district in the damn state to be able to tell if a child can... I don't know... READ?!!!
No idea what reading groups are supposed to be. They did talk about teaming her up with some "high-level" upperclassman, but what's the point? Will they read to each other out loud? Discuss à la book club?
As for literacy assessment, our K teacher did it; it's some kind of 2-digit scale. IIRC, L. scored somewhere at the 4th grade level, and our school only goes up to 4th grade. I was also told "reading doesn't equal comprehension" - then test her comprehension, damn it!

А Вы дочку в RSM (Russian School of Mathematics) водите? Мы тут из провинции иззавидовались все такому ресурсу в Бостоне.
