heartbreak because of "that year, he was seventeen"? and - very temporary. very foreboding. - you're right. there is a reason this thing has a cicadas theme. I don't know how entomologically correct it is but I heard somewhere that cicadas' lifespans are quite long, some live for 12 years, one type lives for 17 (ha). but actually they spend the vast majority of their life underground in the dark. when they finally burrow out of the ground, that's their last summer. they fly and mate and propagate and sing and live under the sun for the first time, and then they die. I'm not an insect person so I don't find them cute or whatever, but there's something that final burst of life that's amazing and rather sad at the same time ( ... )

At the time of the classroom scene, had Jjong met Onew yet?

at the time of this classroom scene, yes they've met. the last line - And that boy - refers to onew. so he drifts off to sleep during class while thinking of, among other things, onew.

I realized that the line referred to Onew. But I thought it was possible that this chapter was creating a sense of who Jjong was before he met Jinki. And that the last part was a narration not by Jjong, foreshadowing what is to come. Mostly because of the introspective way in which it was written. But now that I look at the paragraph again, I realize that you'd mentioned the boy, onew, right before that as well. So obviously not.
