Santa Smex Rules 2008
Welcome to Santa_Smex 2008! :-)
Please read the community rules carefully before you sign up.
Signups will begin later this week (August 1st, 2008) and last for two weeks (August 15th, 2008). DO NOT respond to this post with your request-it will be deleted. Questions, however, are more than welcome here.
A big thanks goes out to gmth for allowing me to borrow (albeit with some modifications) her rules from merry_smutmas and for inspiring this whole fest. :)
venivincere will be assisting the moderator reposoir this year.
Rules:
1. All participants must be at least 18 years of age as of December 1st, 2008. Lurkers and watchers of the community, however, need not be.
2. If you join and request a fic, you must agree to write a fic in return. Lurkers/watchers are also welcome, but they may not request gifts.
3. If you defaulted on either of the previous two years' fests (2006 or 2007), you are not welcome to participate this year (2008). The moderator has a list of those individuals.
4. If you are new to the fest this year (2008), you must provide someone who can vouch for your age should the moderator choose to contact them and inquire. If a participant is caught lying about their age, they will be barred from participating in future fests.
5. You cannot choose the person for whom you will write. You will be assigned a challenge via email by the moderator (reposoir).
6. Signups will last until August 15th. No signups will be accepted after that.
7. All fics must be rated R or NC-17. Het, yaoi and yuri all welcome, but seeing as 95% of the characters we love are male, 95% of the fics will probably be slash.
8. All fics must be at least 1,500 words. There is no maximum length limit.
9. All fics must be spellchecked and (preferably, but not mandatory) beta read.
10. In order to preserve anonymity, all fics must be able to stand on their own and not be part of another series or a sequel/prequel to other fics by the same writer.
11. All fics should be e-mailed to the community moderator at santa_smex @ hotmail.com for posting. DO NOT post them to the community yourself. This would defeat the whole idea of a Secret Santa exchange.
12. The moderator reserves the right to return any fic for revision if she feels it does not meet quality, length or rating standards.
13. Fics are due by:
Sunday, November 16th, 2008 for first-time participants
Sunday, November 23rd, 2008 for second- or third-time participants
Posting will begin on December 1st and run throughout the month of December. Depending on how many signups, the number of fics per day could be less than one or multiples.
14. You are free to try and guess who wrote your gift fic after it has been posted. The identities of all writers will be revealed in early January.
15. All fics posted here will be exclusive to the community until the names of the writers have been revealed. Please do not post them elsewhere on the Internet until that time.
16. If you decide you would like to participate, post a comment to the signup post with the following information (and please stick to this format, as it will make things much easier on if the requests are consistent):
• Your LJ user name
• Your email address (mandatory!)
• For the fic you want written for you:
1. Three to five of your preferred pairings (Be as specific with seme-uke as possible if this matters to you). You can use pairing abbreviations if you like, but please also provide specific character names for those who may not know terms like "28" or "Thrill Pair", etc.
2. A listing of kinks you would like to see in your gift fic, if any
3. Any squicks you do not want to see in your gift fic, if any
4. Any other details you might like to read (which the author may or may not choose to include)
Keep in mind that the more complicated your request is, the less likely a writer will be to follow it exactly.
• For the fic you are going to write for someone else:
1. Any characters or pairings or schools you refuse to write
2. Any kinks you refuse to write (it could be assumed that you are willing to write any kink that is not listed in this section)
• Your request must also contain a statement that you are at least 18 years of age. And, for first-time participants, the name and contact information of someone who can vouch for your age if the moderator checks up on this information.
You must state at least three pairings to give the author some room to work with. A good example of a signup would be the following:

Please note that it is not necessary (although it would be nice!) for fics to have a holiday theme unless that is the request of the person for whom you will be writing.
Other important notes:
• Assignments will go out no later than August 31st (Basically, when the moderator has a chance in late August to arrange everything).
• If you have any questions about your assignment and want to ask the person you are writing for, feel free to drop me an email (santa_smex @ hotmail.com or my personal email address found on my lj) and I can post them to the community so you remain anonymous.
• Alternatively, I have found it helpful in the past as a writer to lurk on my recipient’s LJ to get a better understanding (beyond their request) of what they may or may not like.
• It might be beneficial to you to google "Christmas in Japan", if relevant, before beginning to write.
•Due to the widely divergent tastes of those participating in this community, you may end up being given an assignment which includes a certain kink or character you are uncomfortable writing. Do not feel obligated to include every single kink or detail the person you are writing for has listed in their request. Pick the kink(s) you are comfortable with and leave the rest behind.
• If you are planning to participate this year, please friend this community so you can keep up with any announcements I may make between now and January.
• All submitted fics should include the following headers in the body of the email:
Title
Author (this is for my record keeping purposes only; I will remove your name from the headers before I post your fic to the community)
Recipient's name (VERY VERY IMPORTANT)
Rating
Pairing(s)
Disclaimer (if different from the standard thanks to Konomi)
Warnings (if any)

• All fics should be submitted as Word documents. If your fic requires any special formatting (e.g., italics, bold, etc.), please include the appropriate HTML tags. And please turn off your smart quotes! (Go to the Tools menu --> choose the Auto Correct option --> click on the Auto Format As You Type tab --> in the section called "Replace as you type," clear the checkbox that says "Straight quotes with smart quotes.")
• Please don't screw around with the age requirement. If you are underage, don’t even think about signing up. I know many people in this fandom are underage and probably would love to participate, but it’s a matter of legality, not me being intentionally mean. I will not hesitate to do background checks if I think you are lying about your age. If the latter turns out to be true, I will ban you from commenting and/or reading ANY post here.
• Please post your request to the signup thread rather than making a separate post on the community.
• Please limit your signup request to one comment.
• Please be aware that if necessary, I may have to give your fic to someone other than the person you were assigned. If someone drops out of the fest, before calling for backup writers I'm going to take a look at the finished assignments and see if they can be re-assigned. If I end up having to give your fic to a person other than the one you thought you were writing for, I will let you know prior to posting it.
Space may be limited, and spots may fill up quickly, so if you are planning to participate and feel you can abide by all of the rules listed above, don't hesitate! Sign up while you can (starting tomorrow)!
