It's lines like these that make this fic the brilliant thing it is:
Do you ever feel like there are things you can say in the dark that you can't say normally?" Fuji curls up on his side and clutches his pillow to his chest.
"Are you really in the dark right now?" Yuuta scoffs.
"Aren't you?" Fuji says.
Because really, they both are faltering in the dark, not knowing where to go next. Wonderfully done, anon-san!
You chose Fuji/Yuuta! I am so happy. There are so few good fics on them out there and I was hoping to con one more out of santa_smex. Thank you for incorporating the recurring element of the phone calls because phone calls just have a way with me.
These lines are what I love best:
Fuji doesn't remember falling asleep, but he wakes up at 5 a.m. with the phone mashed into his face. It's out of battery. He leaves it there and closes his eyes again.
"I miss you too," Yuuta finally mumbles, and hangs up.
The tightness in his chest causes Fuji to realize he doesn't know if that's even what he wanted to hear.
Fuji calls his brother that night and for the first time ever, it goes straight to voicemail.
Fuji wakes up in the morning with an unsettling sense of hopelessness. Yuuta doesn't answer that night, or the next. Sometimes his phone is on and sometimes it's off but Fuji gets accustomed to the artificial-sounding woman telling him to leave a message. He always hangs up before she's done.
To be honest, I did not get the significance of the

Ahh, this comment! I honestly cannot even describe how huge I grinned when I read this. I've always been too scared to post Prince of Tennis fic and so I was utterly terrified about this fic, but your comment completely melted all of that away. Writing for you was so fun and I am beyond pleased that you enjoyed this fic :))) Thank you so much for the sweet sweet comment! ♥
Excellent Fujicest! Good setting, good pace and a wonderful phone-call exchange between them, with well-measured lines. Everybody is very IC, the dynamics are Jr. High revisited and the evolution is addictive. A nice way to end it too. I loved it!
GOD I love good Fujicest. This is an AWESOME fic, anon.
He does enjoy it, enjoys winning, enjoys pushing people to their limit, forcing them to rise to meet his level and watching them fail in the end.
GOD THIS IS SO FUCKING FUJI. You really catch that aspect of his personality well in this - the slightly malicious side of him (without being outright EVIL).
"Yuuta-kun, are you awake?" Fuji finally hears in the background.
"Yes!" Yuuta says, and hangs up without saying goodbye.
OH, Yuuta.
And OH, the part where they fall asleep on the phone together. SO PRECIOUS. I love Fuji's comparison to when they were kids on walkie-talkies; what a great detail!
"I miss you too," Yuuta finally mumbles, and hangs up.
OH, YUUTA. That is so perfectly him.
The flashback scene was great. And the Mizuki confrontation (HEH I just love when those two butt heads) and, of course, the ending. ♥ LOVED the ending. THIS WAS AN AWESOME FIC, ANON. I HOPE YOU WRITE MANY MORE LIKE IT IN THE FUTURE. ♥

"Not really," Yuuta says, and Fuji's glad.
Loved the last two lines ♥
It's always good to read some Fujicest, and well written, too!
