Everything stopped.
The earth stopped turning, cars froze in the streets, and Thera's heart shuddered to a painful halt.
No. No. This couldn't be happening. Not to her. Not to her baby.
She counted again.
53, 54, 55, 56, 57, 58, 59....
Tails swished. Chests purred. Almond shaped eyes of all colors and sizes blinked at Thera. There should have been 120 eyes. 120 beautiful, round, healthy, shiny cat eyes that spoke of mischief and long, lazy days in the sun. But there were only 118 eyes.
Thera had lost sleep over this for nights, each passing day leading to an increase of anticipation and distraught tension. And, of course, if Thera lost sleep, then Atthis did. If not for Atthis's own motherly conscience then for Thera's dramatic bawling and nose blowing into the wee hours. Tissues were becoming scarce around the apartment.
"Polydoro!" Thera cried. Tears streamed down both cheeks, her nose was red from blowing, and her posture had melted into something weak and pained. (Amazingly, Atthis noted, Thera still managed to put on makeup every morning and pull up her hair. And the way she dabbed that tissue, not a bit of it was misplaced.) "Four days! Four days Polydoro's been out on the cold streets in this wretched town! It's snowing outside, Atthis! What if his paws get wet? He could freeze to death! Or get hit by a car! Or get fleas! Oh Atthis!"
Atthis had to admit, it was nice having a beautiful woman thrust her face into her breasts once every half hour. The fact that said woman was crying made the situation a bit less novel, though.
"What am I going to do?" There was no end to this anguish. Not when it came to Thera's cats. "Polydoro must be so upset. So lost and confused! How did he get so far from the apartment that he couldn't come back? What will Mavrouko do without her brother?"
Pat pat. Hushed words of encouragement. A few classic suggestions to help. A poster on the lamp posts? An ad in the newspaper?
Thera gasped.
"My blog!"
As soon as Thera's face had hit Atthis's chest, it left, and the small woman was scrambling to the pink laptop computer left open on the kitchen table. Thera politely shooed three cats out of the chair and took a seat. Well, at least she'd stopped crying. For now.
Better get dinner going before Thera starts the waterworks again...
