Character name: Roronoa Zoro
Fandom: One Piece
Timeline: Fishman Island
Age: 21
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Zoro did not eat any of the mythical Devil
Fruit that exist in his world, yet he is still one of the three strongest members of
the Strawhat pirate crew. He is a very skilled swordsman who is able to fight with
one, two, or three katana. In addition to that, he is incredibly strong and is often
shown lifting ridiculously heavy things, such as abnormally large weights and even an
entire building. He is also able to cut through steel and other strong materials.
Though he is strong, Zoro is not at all lacking in speed. He has excellent reflexes
and endurance, and can move very quickly both on land and in the water. Also, Zoro is
able to hold his liquor very well.
How would they use their abilities?: He'd probably get into fights some way or
another, but Zoro would mostly use his abilities to protect his crewmates and any other
new friends he might make on the Thor.
Appearance: Zoro stands at 5'10" with a muscular build. His most noticeable
feature is his hair, which is a mossy green color. In his left ear, he has three
piercings and wears three identical golden dangly earrings. Though his outfits have
changed from time-to-time, Zoro consistently wears a green haramaki around his waist
and also a black bandana around his left bicep, no matter what else he is wearing, and
he usueally wears plain black boots that come up about mid-shin. Currenly, he's
wearing a black robe with long sleeves that falls just above his ankles. The front is
slightly opened, showing off some of his chest. He wears his haramaki beneath the
robe, and ties a red sash around his waist.
Since he's joined the Strawhat crew, Zoro has received four notable scars: one long one
slashed diagonally across his chest, one scar around each of his ankles, and most
recently a vertical slash over his left eye.
Background: As a child, Zoro grew up in Shimotsuki Village at the Isshin Dojo,
located in East Blue. There, he began his training as a swordsman, using only two
swords at first. Even as a child, he had great strength and was able to defeat
everyone in the dojo - except Kuina, the sensei's daughter. This motivated him to
continue practicing until the day he would be able to defeat her and become the
greatest swordsman in the world. Kuina also had the same dream, and they made a
promise that one day, one of them must become the world's best swordsman. However,
they day after they made this promise, Kuina died after taking a fall down the stairs.
Upset by her death, Zoro asked the sensei for Kuina's sword, the Wado Ichimonji. From
then on, he took on a more vigorous training regiment and began to develop his three-
sword style by holding Kuina's sword with his teeth.
In order to pursue his dream of becoming the world's greatest swordsman, Zoro set out
in search for Dracule Mihawk, who is currently said to hold that title. In order to
earn money during his travels, he took on bounties and earned a reputation as "Pirate
Hunter Zoro." While he was in Shells Town, Zoro killed a wolf in order to protect a
young girl. This wolf happened to be the beloved pet of a Marine captain's spoiled son
Helmeppo. Angered by Zoro's actions, Helmeppo gave Zoro an ultimatum: Be tied to a
pole for a month with no food or drink, or the littler girl and her mother would die.
Of course, Zoro made the honorable decision to be tied to a pole to save the innocent
woman and her child. A few days before this month was up, Monkey D. Luffy arrived in
Shells Town, where he heard of the conflict between Zoro and Helmeppo. Luffy found
Zoro and asked him to be part of his pirate crew, but being a pirate hunter, Zoro
refused. However, after discovering that Helmeppo intended to execute Zoro all along,
he agreed to join Luffy's crew if the young captain would retrieve his swords. After
defeating the corrupted Marines on the island, Zoro became the first crew member of the
Strawhat pirates.
The two continued their travels together, gradually gathering crewmates one by one,
plus a pirate ship called the Going Merry, but it wasn't until the Strawhat pirates
arrived at the unique boat-restaurant, called the Baratie, that Zoro encountered Dracul
Mihawk for the first time. The legendary swordsman was in pursuit of a pirate named
Don Krieg, who had been attempting to take control of the Baratie. However, instead of
fighting Krieg, Mihawk was challenged by Zoro, who was not at all ready to face such a
strong opponent. Seeing Zoro's determination, Mihawk decided not to kill him, but
instead left a huge gash across Zoro's torso. Before departing Mihawk challenged the
young swordsman to become stronger and one day surpass him as the world's greatest
swordsman.
During the fight with Mihawk, two of Zoro's swords were broken. He still had Kuina's
Wado Ichimonji, but he still needed to find two new swords for his three-sword fighting
style. While browsing through a sword shop in Loguetown, Zoro came across the Sandai
Kitetsu, a sword that was said to be cursed, bringing a terrible death to its owner.
Interested by this story, Zoro decided to test his luck. He threw the sword into the
air and held out his arm to see if the sword would cut him or not. Fortunately, the
blade just missed his arm as it fell to the ground. Impressed by this feat, the shop
owner gave Zoro a second sword (Yubashiri) for free.
After Loguetown, the crew proceeded to travel from East Blue to the Grand Line, which
is a legendary ocean current that circumnavigates the globe. It is said that this is
where a pirate's adventure truly begins. Here, the Strawhat crew visited a variety of
islands such as Whiskey Peak, Little Garden, and Drum Island, and they also aided
Princess Nefertari Vivi in liberating her country, Alabasta, from a criminal
organization known as Baroque Works. This incident put a bounty of 60 million beli on
Zoro's head, giving him the second highest bounty in the crew, next to Luffy. After
gaining two new crewmates, the pirates managed to visit an island in the sky, known as
Skypeia.
Once they returned to the Grand Line, the crew found themselves at Water 7, where
Robin, their newest crew member, was arrested by a Marine organization known as CP9.
In order to her, Zoro and the others assaulted Enies Lobby, one of three important
government strongholds, which is used as a courthouse and holding facility for
criminals. The crew succeeded in rescuing Robin, and after the incident, Enies Lobby
was left in ruins. Though, during the fighting, Zoro lost another sword. Yubashiri
was destroyed in a fight against Marine captain Shu, but the entire crew suffered yet
an even greater loss: Their ship, the Going Merry, had taken too many beatings, and it
was far beyond repair. After giving the ship a proper "funeral," the crew received a
new ship - the Going Merry - and welcomed Franky, a shipwright, to their crew. After
the Enies Lobby incident, Zoro's bounty increased to 120 million beli.
The next destination in the Strawhat crew's travels was Thriller Bark - a giant,
haunted ship owned by Gekko Moriah, a pirate who has the ability to reanimate corpses
by stealing the shadows of the living. Here, they gained a new crew member. Also,
Zoro encountered a "zombie" that was created from the shadow of a legendary swordsman
named Ryuma, who wielded a legendary sword called Shuusui. This sword was said to have
an incredibly strong blade that would not break "even if a dinosaur were to step on
it." So, Zoro defeated Ryuma and took Shuusui for himself, completing his set of three
swords.
After defeating Moriah and his minions, an injured Strawhat crew was faced with a new
opponent - Bartholemew Kuma. He originally arrived at Thriller Bark for a meeting with
Moriah, but after Moriah's defeat, the Marines ordered Kuma to eliminate all witnesses
to this incident. He knocked out the entire crew, but before he could finish them off,
Zoro came to and attempted to attack Kuma, but the wound was not enough to defeat him.
In a last attempt to save his crew, Zoro offered to sacrifice his own life for his
captain's. Sanji, the crew's cook, also came to and tried to offer his life instead,
but Zoro knocked his crewmate unconscious once again, feeling that it would be
necessary to sacrifice himself, rather than Sanji. Kuma agreed that the crew would not
be harmed, and in exchange, Zoro would suffer all the pain and injuries that Luffy
received during the fight against Moria. Kuma managed to transfer the pain from the
captain to Zoro, almost killing the swordsman, and just as promised, he left the crew
alone.
The crew continued their journey to the Sabaody Archipelago, where they intended to
cover their ship in a unique coating that would allow them to journey underwater to
Fishman Island. However, the Strawhats were once again attacked by Marines, along with
Bartholemew Kuma. They soon discovered that this was not the real Kuma, and that there
were, in fact, several robotic copies. Realizing they were not strong enough to win
this fight, the pirates attempted to flee, but the real Kuma appeared and interfered
before Zoro and the rest of the crew could escape. He touched each crew member,
causing them to suddenly disappear. In reality, he sent each one to different islands
all over the world, separating the crew.
Zoro's destination was the ruins of the Shikkearu Kingdom on Kuraigana Island, where he
encountered Perona, who was previously a minion of Moria. As it turned out, this
island was also the home of none other than Dracul Mihawk. At first, Zoro was dead-set
on leaving this island, fighting through hordes of warrior babboons to get to the sea.
However, after Perona read to him an article in a newspaper about Luffy, Zoro returned
to Mihawk and begged him for training. In the newspaper, there was a secret message
from the captain telling the crew to meet up at the Sabaody Archipelago in two years.
Zoro spent this time learning from the man he was determined to one day defeat.
Two years later, Zoro was first to arrive to the archipelago, thanks to Perona's aid.
At this point, it was clear that his power has increased immensly, as seen when he
cleaved an entire ship in two. After reuniting, the Strawhat crew boarded their ship,
which had been coated and looked after by friends in their absence, and they proceeded
to travel to Fishman Island. Here, it was revealed that Zoro's new bounty is now 160
million beli. King Neptune invited Zoro to the palace, but fearing his kingdom's
safety, locked up the swordsman and attempted to capture the other crew members. It
seemed that his imprisonment was voluntary, however, because once he heard his other
crewmates fighting (out of self-defense, of course), Zoro easily broke out of captivity
and tied up the king. Shortly after, a crew of fishman pirates with ill intent
attacked the palace, and the Strawhats were forced to release the king and fight the
new invaders. In general, fishmen are stronger than humans, and their strength only
increases underwater. When Zoro engaged one of the fishman pirates in battle, the
others were shocked to find a human could so easily defeat a fishman, even underwater.
Zoro fled the palace with King Neptune, Usopp, and Brooke. All were last seen being
captured by the New Fishman Pirate crew.
Personality: The first impression Zoro gives is that he is an apathetic,
coldhearted brute, and that actually is true, to a degree. In most cases, Zoro seems
aloof and stoic, and maybe even a little coldhearted. For example, when Chopper was
crying and upset because he was forced to join the Foxy Pirate crew (temporarily), Zoro
told him to shut his mouth, and that Chopper was disgraceful, essentially telling the
young reindeer to sit down and man up. This shocked the other crew members, but oddly
enough, it worked to inspire Chopper to be brave. Also, Zoro really does enjoy a good
fight. Unlike some of the other crew members, he does not hesitate to exectue
destructive attacks that could kill his opponent, and he seems genuinely happy and
excited when he is in battle.
Because he is so coolheaded, Zoro tends to be the voice of reason among the crewmates,
especially since Captain Luffy tends to be a bit too excitable. For this reason, in
addition to the fact that he was the first crew member, Zoro is often seen as the first
mate of the Strawhat crew. Despite being one of the logical crew members, he has a
tendency to immediately resort to an extreme solution, such as cutting off his legs to
escape a situation in which he was rendered immobile (which is how he got the scars
around his ankles, by the way). Also, there are certain moments where he can be goaded
into losing his temper every now and again.
Going past his hardened demeanor, Zoro is genuinely a kind individual, as he proved in
Shells town to protect the little girl and her mother. He is also incredibly loyal to
the crew, and clearly not afraid to die for them. In a dispute, Zoro almost always
stands by the captain's decisions, whether he agrees or not. He also has a strong
sense of honor and holds to many Bushido philosophies. Vivi even calls him "Mr.
Bushido." Zoro believes it is a great shame for a warrior to have a scar on his back,
and he will almost never attack an enemy from the behind, except in extreme cases.
During his fight with Mihawk, Zoro actually turned around to face his opponent so that
he could take the defeating blow from the front.
Zoro's biggest weakness is his horrible sense of direction and inability to understand
directions. It is so bad, he could probably get lost walking down the street. For
example, when told to go north, Zoro thought it would be a good idea to climb a clock
tower, thinking "north" and "up" were the same thing. What's more is that he hardly
even realizes how horrible his sense of direction is. Whenever he wanders away, he
always assumes it's the rest of the crew who are the lost ones. Strangely enough,
despite the fact that he always loses his way, somehow Zoro always manages, by chance,
to end up in the right place just in time.
Finally, Zoro's passtimes (aside from fighting) include sleeping, weight-lifting, and
booze-drinking. He doesn't do much more than that during downtime, and is even known
to fall asleep while he's supposed to be keeping watch on the ship.

1st person sample: Tch. Looks like those guys got lost again.
[Actually, it's Zoro who's lost, but he won't ever admit that.]
Guess I'm supposed to talk to people with this thing.
[Zoro frowns as he looks over the Guide, not really understanding this kind of communication, but he figures he'll at least give it a try. Naturally, the first thing he wants to do is challenge the best fighters on the ship to a fight.]
Oi. Who's the strongest swordsman here? If I can't be the greatest swordsman in my world, guess that means I'll have to be the best in the universe.
3rd person sample: There was only so much of the Vogons' bureaucracy Zoro could take. He had no idea where he was or what he was supposed to do, so he decided to cooperate at first and fill out the forms as he was told. It wasn't until the Vogon told him that he would have to go all the way back to the end of the line that he finally decided he had enough of this crap. Being told that his home planet was destroyed wasn't very helpful, either.
“Forget it,” he scowled at the alien. “I'm done with your stupid forms.”
“Actually, sir, there are still several--”
Before the Vogon could finish, Zoro crumpled up the paper and tossed it over his shoulder. As he started to walk away, he could hear a gasp of shock from the alien employee. Noticing the situation at hand, another Vogon worker approached the green-haired swordsman.
“You're not allowed to do that,” he said. “If you do not wish to fill out the forms, you need to complete the blue form to apply for exemption.”
“Like hell I do,” Zoro replied as he continued to walk away, clearly not taking these forms as seriously as the Vogons did.
Words clearly weren't working with this one, and the authorities could see that. Security quickly reacted to bar passage to Zoro, ready to take action.
“Resistance is useless!” the aliens shouted.
“Heh. We'll see about that...” the swordsman said with a grin as he began to draw his swords. Now this was much more fun than waiting in line.
