Sometimes my job sucks. Like royally. But let's start from the beginning.
My name is Sally. And I’m a Cupid. Yeah, a real one. I’m in this job almost 3 thousands years. Huge amount of time. But I’ve got the most respectable position. To bring together the soul mates. You know, every person have a soul mate, but a meeting with your other half can happen only after a couple of lifetimes. So my job is to bring together two people, watch as their love unfolds and keep eyes on them. And after birth of their children I’m automatically becoming their personal cupid too. Honestly it’s not really hard. So sometimes I get a little bored. Last time when I had a good challenge was almost two thousands years ago! I took a really big part in bringing together one iron-willed warrior and one stubborn bard. But I managed. With all this “happily-ever-after”. And when one and a half year ago my boss gave me a new assignment I thought about another boring plan “bring together-shoot an arrow-watch”. And… I could never be more wrong! And now I’m on a verge of stabbing myself with my own arrow! Why? I’ll tell you about them and you can decide for yourself.
When I got the file with my new assignment and saw two very beautiful women with disastrous track of records and a lot of issues, I thought: “What the hell, they’re soul mates. Four dates and I can write report on successful operation”. I started planning.
First one was Calliope Torres. Tall, gorgeous Latina with deep chocolate eyes and a wavy dark hair. Previous year was awful for her. Two break-ups, struggling with sexuality, loneliness. She created very high walls around her heart. And another one - Arizona Robbins. Stunning blonde with vibrant blue eyes and killer dimples. She had a long line of failed relationship and last year went through awful tragedy - she lost her brother. So she had a big hole in her heart and many demons in her soul.
After their biographies I studied their personalities. It was the first warning bells for me that everything won’t be as easy as I thought at the beginning. Cause they were two polar people! One badass rock-star with a scalpel (her words, not mine) and another - perky, roller-skating, full of rainbows adult (again not my words). It was like mixing oil and water! But… I had no other choice. They’re destined to be together.
And my brilliant (I hoped) plan was set into motion. I decided that I need to push Arizona to make a first move. That way she could give some needed confidence to Calliope. And it worked perfectly! Well, almost. I wanted their first meeting to be more romantic, not in the dirty bathroom at the bar. I placed them in this bar to notice each other, but I didn’t think that after a couple of strong drinks, Arizona would dig out her courage and corner Calliope in the bathroom! But it somehow worked and I saw like after their kiss a little thin line which was connecting their heart started to get brighter and brighter. It meant that their souls recognized each other. It meant forever.
Oh, I felt so proud! But not for long…
First problems started after Calliope told her father about her new girlfriend. Oh, the look on his face! But it stopped being funny after he disowned her. So she was left without her family and with empty bank account. Her pride didn’t let her admit that she had financial problems so she tried to shut Arizona out. But little blonde turned out to be very persistent. They found a compromise and I sighed in relief. They were getting stronger and stronger. They talked about future. Until one day Calliope asked about children. It was a reason for the first break up. Because Callie never imagined her life without children and Arizona blocked out all thoughts about having tiny humans. It was dead end. And I couldn’t do anything. Because it’s not in my powers to break someone’s will. I could guide them, but can’t change their heart desires. So I waited. And when horrible tragedy came to hospital in form of the shooter and they turned out to be in one place without a chance to ignore each other I saw my chance. I used my powers and lessen some of their inner barriers. There was a lot of screaming and arguing. And then they came face to face with the shooter. Callie shielded Arizona form him and persuaded this angry man to leave them alone. It worked and they got out alive and with different priorities in life. It was crucial point in their life.
They made up and agreed on some significant milestones of their joint future. So I took a little vacation and was relaxing, when… Arizona won some stupid grant! Why no one mentioned it in the report? I mean, it’s not a minor detail! Why? Because she is moving to Africa! So I went immediately to Seattle. But I was a little late… Because of some stupid mistake in my office I got this news almost a month late. So when I arrived they were standing in the middle of the airport, screaming at each other. I needed to do something! So I sent all rules to hell and took some matters in my hand. First of all I sent a little (ok, not so little) storm to Seattle. So all flights were postponed (I think the meteorologists still can’t understand what happened). Well, after that I cast a little spell on them (it’s pushing people to say the truth). It was always their problem. I mean talking. So after my stunt all hell broke loose and they started talking about everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. I really didn’t need to know about some things…
So now I’m patiently watching as they sorting out their problems. It’s almost 3 hours of constant arguing. I glad for one thing - the storm ended 2 hours ago and Arizona didn’t notice that her plane flew away without her. As for the rest - I’m frustrated beyond words! 3 hours! And they only now touched the subject of their second break-up. So I’m telling you again - my job sometimes the worst in the world. Just see for yourself…
“Calliope… I didn’t know what to do! Yes, I won that grant, but I don’t want it. I want to stay here, with you, but I never backed out from responsibility. And I need to go…”
“I know, and I was ready to go with you. Even…”
“No you didn’t! The whole month you were bitchy, edgy and aggressive! And…”
“So why you didn’t asked me about it?”
For the first time in 3 hours the silence settled around them. Until Arizona whispered her answer.
“I was scared…”
“What? Scared of what?”
“Of you leaving me…” she dropped her head and saw like her first tear fell on her clenched fist.
Callie scooted closer to Arizona and very gently wiped her tears. Blonde surgeon looked at her with so much love and devotion that Callie’s heart clenched in her chest.
“I will never leave you. Why can’t you understand that? I. Love. You. And I’m not going anywhere.” After hearing this words Arizona closed her eyes and took a deep breath, silently making a decision.
“Calliope, promise me that you won’t argue with me about this.”
“If you want me to silently watch like you’re boarding that plane…” Arizona didn’t let her finish.
“I’m not going anywhere without you.” Latina’s smile lit up the whole room “So, you promise?”
“I promise.”
“We’re not going to Africa.” Smile dropped.
“What? Why? How?” Arizona laughed.
“Well, first of all, I love you and I want to build a life with you here, in Seattle.” She kissed dumfounded Callie. “Secondly, I always can find someone to take my place and just coordinate the project.” Another kiss. Now ortho surgeon snapped out of trance and responded to the kiss. “And thirdly…”
“What?” Callie quirked an eyebrow. Arizona smirked.
“We missed our flight…”
Um… well… forget about what I said earlier. Now, looking at this pair, making out in the middle of the airport I can say only one thing: “I love my job!”
Oh I have a new letter. Additional assignment? What? In two years I’ll become a personal cupid of Elizabeth Robbins-Torres? Uh-oh…
