I don't deny I'm quite the fangirl, but fandom really doesn't do it for me these days. Fandom actually turns me away from stuff, believe it or not! I pretty much never go to the several Bollywood message boards that I'm a member of, or read anything on the Star Wars message board I've been a member of for many years except for a few threads on the Sydney board, and don't even think I've got a membership to the Phantom (as in the comics) board anymore. Sure, I do like having people to discuss my favourite things with, but fandom kinda scares me, so I prefer to be a lone ranger than one of many crazed Abhi-fangirls!
You know I'm a fangirl too, and a large one at that. It's only recently started to become a turn-off for me because I think it's so counterproductive. I mean, it's one thing to take a break from reality but it's another to take whatever goes on during that break and extend it to "intellectualizing" things that aren't intended to be intellectualized, especially since there's a whole world out there filled with people to interact with. I don't know why it's so hard to go out on a limb and learn something completely different. (And if people end up not liking it, they can do something else). I mean I could be out helping the poor, feeding the starving, reading a book, saving the environment (my future career goal), or something else. It's all up to me; I have a choice.
