In Korean, wisdom tooth is named as Sa-rang-nee (사랑니, love teeth) referring to the young age and the pain of the first love.

I sat on the couch, waiting for my turn to be attended by the dentist with one hand clutching the underside of my cheek once in awhile wincing in pain. I will myself to endure the pain a little bit longer, before it’s due to be extracted. The jabbing pain of the wisdom tooth reminded me of the same ache my fragile heart had been through when I was young and foolish.

~

It was another summer day, similar to this, with the sunlight penetrating the opaque window and I was obstinately sweating even though I was wearing a flimsy tank top and shorts laying flat  with limbs and legs stretched out in the middle of the living room. The air-conditioner was broke, and my mother was making phone calls to the electrician, the maintenance basically anyone that could fix it. I stood up, passing my mother on the hallway heading to the kitchen wanting to quench my scorched throat with tall glass of cool lemonade.

I opened the fridge, the burst of cool air was pleasing and I spent minutes standing in front of it which I had gotten me a long lecture and a red ear from my mother. In the end, after sipping the lemonade, with nothing to do, I went outside, perhaps my friends are there as well seeking amusement in this arid day.

I rode my bicycle heading to the playground. The neighbourhood was boiling and was quiet from children’s chatters and bonkers. The weather wasn’t that bad with constant breeze, I thought to myself.

I sat on the swing, moving back and forth, brooding, and daydreaming to occupy my boredom with my slippers untangled from my feet. And, that’s when he came.

“Hello!”He crooned; I was rather annoyed with his carefree disposition. I tilted my head, his figure covering the sun’s intensity. He was tiny, half of my height with his ivory skin and mushroom hair. He was all-smile with his front teeth exposed.

“What do you want?”I asked, still aggravated.

“I’m Taemin.”He plunges his hand forward, in sign of starting a new friendship. I stood up menacingly, he backed away and I went away from him. Few meters away from him, a triggering hunch made me turned my head back. He was nowhere to be seen, and I ran as fast as I could with guilt eating me little by little.

He had fallen to the trap; I and friends had set earlier this summer. He was helpless and I was starting to sweat. I thrust my hand forward.

“Taemin, take my hand.”I urged, feeling the sweat trickling on my sideburn. He jumped a little, trying to reach it.

“Hyung, I can’t!”He shouted back, the hole was deeper than I thought and was hollow. The boy had squatted down and started crying. And, that moment I hated my mischievous side that had caused this misfortune.

“Taeminnie, don’t worry hyung will figure out a way, please don’t cry.”I shouted back determined to redeem my fault.

“Really, hyung?”He asked, his sobbing had ceased and I was put into ease.

“Yes, just stay there.”I said before I ran along the perimeter of the park searching for something that could help.

“Taeminnie, hyung’s back”I shouted and he stood up. I propelled the long stick that I found and his frail fingers grasped the end of it tightly, I pulled him up.

I landed on the green grass and he was on top of me. We were silent for a moment, with our short breath clashing, that moment he clutches my shirt with his fingers - that moment a raw emotion brew deep inside of me. With my finger, I swiped off the remnants of his tears gently.

“Thank you - “He paused searching for an answer.

“My name is Minho.”I said when we both stood up and patted off sand and grass from out clothes.

“Thank you, Minho hyung!”Suddenly, feeble limbs were around my neck clasping me in a tight embrace. His hair was tickling my nose with its childish strawberry scent.

We pulled back and I offered to send him back.”Let’s go!”He exclaimed cheerfully, reaching for my fingers to fill the gaps of his.

The sun was setting, but my heart had just risen with this newfound emotion.

~

Starting then, every waking moment I spent with him and every dream had him as the heroine. We were best friends, cycling from sunrise till sunset, exploring the neighbourhood with the vibrant colours of Taemin’s imagination. I was looking from his eyes, as I was blind before his presence. He took me to the adventures I only read in books, one day we were pirates enduring the deadly storm, the next we were knight and princess. That raw feeling had started to flourish with the limitation of my knowledge; I protected him with my outmost efforts, shielding him away from my friends. I was happy and I believed he did too.

~

It was the last few days of summer, where our days had spent in running along the streets being Native Americans; we stopped on the pavement in front of his house when I muttered those 3 words.

“Taeminnie, I love you!”I said fidgety, glancing everywhere but at him.

“Love? What is love?”He tilted his head questioningly, not knowing the definition to it.

I had seen the scenes in soap operas that my mother and Taemin’s mother used to watch during our visits and sleepovers.

I cupped his plump cheeks and pressed our lips together, sparks fly when the chocolate taste tinges on my lips. We pulled back and his cheeks were red and he was giggling all the way to his house and I was everything but normal that night, ecstatic and euphoric, silently praying that we’ll attend the same school.

~

But, bad news came the next day, when I went to his house wanting to go on a new adventure with him. The Lee’s were loading boxes and furniture’s into a lorry, I looked everywhere for Taemin but he wasn’t there.

The lorry started moving and I saw Taemin on the backseat of Mr.Lee’s car, eyes searching and when his eyes fell on me, he tried to open the door. The car slowly moved away from my sight as I chased it with him in tears.

Since that day, I had been hoping he’ll return to my side.

~

“Choi Minho!”The nurse announced from her counter, I stood up still with my palm on the underside of my cheek.

The dentist office door creaked open and a mob of blonde hair bulges out and the features of it was somewhat familiar but a little more grown up and more beautiful that I recalled.

“Minho hyung?”The voice said and I was flabbergasted.

It was indeed him, but the nosy nurse urges us to move along.

~

When I opened the dentist’s door, I was glad he was sitting there on the couch with the same smile he presented that summer day.

“Let’s go! We have a lot of catching up to do.”He said, filling the gaps of my fingers with his .

I am crying alone at that place
I am smiling because I have no more tears
I can't erase the memories with you alone
So now I am wandering about
