The forest even from an outsider’s point of view was a keeper of secrets - for years and years of its life managed to keep its mouth shunned and isolate it from the scrutinising eyes of the villagers. There was something magical hidden deep in the forest, something yet intriguing for human’s curiosity wanting to plunge their dirty hands unravelling its secret. From the colour of the leaves that seemed too embrowned and enlightens the forest. The swift and graceful changes of its atmosphere as foretold by the hunters to the villagers, once they entered the forest, shivers creep under their skin, even the bravest man go limp in the hand of the forest conductor, or dubbed as “spirit of the forest.” The aged and wise villagers had mentioned the existence and the presence of the forest fairies, which had conspired to halt any movement or actions of stealing the abundance the forest offers.
It was in autumn, when the leaves are yellowing, and the apples were hanging low from its branches red and copious with nutrients. If in the spring, the forest was full with life and vivacious colour, at this zenith, the “spirit of the forest” was at its weakest point, vulnerable to be wounded. The hunters had sighted creatures with sharp, pointy ears, with the barks and dried leaves covering their private parts. The hunters had stared at them in horror and shock, pointing their rifles towards the unknown creature with shivering hands, whilst the creatures appeared to be disgusted by their presence in their territory with their eyes bulging out akin to a walnut. The hunters rushed to the headman’s house and after long discussion amongst the council. It was decided the very next morning, a party of villagers will venture in the forbidden forest, trespassing the invisible cordon sanitaire their ancestors had drawn in the past, lead by the headman’s prince, the valiant Choi Minho.
~
The next morning, the intruders started off at the break of the dawn, just before the stray of morning sunlight appears with their rucksacks piled with food supplies and shoulders burdened with the trust of the villagers had inflicted upon them. After bidding a teary farewell to their paramour and family, they set off to the unknown crunching the dried leaves lying helplessly on the forest’s floor, the sunlight trickling from the gaps of the intersecting branches. Their young blood was coursing with adrenaline, driving passion for an adventure. They walked and walked in a straight line formation with their leader on the front, followed by his advisor and other men with height ranging from the shortest to the tallest of them all.
It was almost lunch, when their clothing was damped in sweat, stomach churning to be fed and their body were unbearably in ennui. They seek refuge beneath a shady tree, sitting in a circle. They were abstemious in consumption of their foods. Before they continue their journey, their leader abetted their worn-out spirit with words of encouragements. With their stomach full and their spirit had been renewed, even when the sun had stood still; they dragged their feet like a bear.
~
I have a hunch that something was wrong; this whole thing was a mistake. I had acceded to my father’s request, wanting to prove that I’m worthy of his seat, once he decided to relinquish the throne.
Now and then, there’s a sound of rustling of the leaves, the crunch were softer than the pressure our boots sole had wreak with. Every time I looked around, anticipating for a sudden movement, it disappears from my hearing.
~
“Choi-sshi, beware!”One of the men shrieked in horror, and all eyes falls on him in shock, at the moment the entourage were suddenly paralysed with the presence of those creatures the hunters had described gorily, they had thought the stories were exaggerated, even so their good night sleep had been tarnished. But, their leader weren’t disgusted nor he was horrified like his contingent, he was indeed amazed by the group of creature in front of him. Since he was young, he had thought the forest was a fascinating place, children were afraid every time the tale were foretold by the elders, but he thought differently, nature is beautiful and fragile and wouldn’t dare even to raise a finger to human kind.
The leader of the creature, they thought, bowed politely in front of them. They were thunderstruck with their mannerism that in the human world had long gone and forgotten. So, the humans imitated them and bowed insecurely.
“I’m Onew, and I’m the leader’s son.”The said elf thrusts his hand forward in greeting, the man, they assumed, with his black mop of hair roughly shaven. His posture signifies dignity and honour, a leader indeed. And, Minho was ashamed with his lack of poise and leadership.
“I’m Choi Minho, the village headman’s son.”Minho jointed their hand and shook them as curious pair of eyes of his contingent and the elves.
~
The elves had brought them to their sanctuary, offering hospitality to the contingent. For Minho, the place was a heaven on earth. It was situated a far cry from the human eyes, it was similar to their village, but if at his own village, he wasn’t flocked by security and attention. As if his heart had returned to his long- left home, their houses were built on trees with barks. They stepped in the village, eyes looking left and right amazed, the elves ceased from their activities, whispering to another with their fingers pointing at their clothing, same goes to his group, they were whispering, commenting on how the elves had managed to build those houses.
A horn was blown, piercing to his soul and burnt his ears.
“The leader of the mankind is summoned to meet Leader Lee.”The elf that had blown the horn announced with his voice loud and clear.
And, Minho was nervous, as he was ashamed with his own self.
~
He was brought to the Leader Lee’s house; it was smaller compared to the humans, but the elves were exceptionally taller than human as the door was designated, doubled his height.
He was offered water in a coconut shell, as he was left to wait. The said man appeared later, and much like Onew, the man stand with power and the way he walks emits authority.
“So, young man, tell me what brings you and your men here?”The man asked. His question reads as testy and petulant, which may or may not be the intended tone.
“Curiosity brings us out here today, Sir.”He answered honestly, he was curious with the creatures of that occupies the inches of the forest and was it really a spirit doing that made the forest enchanted?
“I see. I trust you boy, but I’ll keep my eyes on you.”The man squint his eyes in observing him, trying to find any underlying intention of this intruding.
“Appa!”A melodious voice shouted and the man seemed to lose his air of seriousness as his lips curled a smile. That moment, Minho had thought perhaps this person was special, and had his spell bind on the chief.
An elf, ambivalent of its gender, the expanse of snowy skin with a hinge of redness on its cheek perhaps due to the sunlight, with delicate pair of eyes, petite and when he walked in the room, the auburn locks residing on top of his head waved as his feet took him forward. At the moment, Minho thought, perhaps this wasn’t an elf but a fairy instead.
The creature embraced the man tightly and the man’s smile grows wider. Somehow, Minho felt a tinge of jealousy as he never had a relationship this close with his father, his father, a commanding man who busied himself with the village welfare’s but not so much of his son. They pulled back.
“Sorry, I didn’t realise there was a visitor.”The elf bowed, and when the strand of his hair waved, the smell of perennials floated into his nose. The elf later took his seat next to the chief. The chief securely wrapped his hand around the elf’s waist.
“This here is my beautiful son, Taeminnie.”The man introduced and the boy was red and looking downwards.
“Appa, I’m not beautiful! And, my name is Taemin!”The boy retorted with a pout.
The boy’s statement was in fact wrong, and was slanted. In Minho’s eyes, he was the only person that had ceased his eyes from moving astray with the ethereal beauty it possessed and its demure composure.
~
The gushing of the waterfall and the cool river water had rejuvenated his body. It was nice to soak in without interruption, listening to the birds chirping. His eyes were glancing around in admiration when his eyes rested on a slim figure with a snowy white skin, and his cheeks were red in embarrassment. Minho quickly dives in, hiding away. When he went out of the water, the figure was still there eyeing the area.
“Who’s there?”Taemin shouted, covering himself with his clothing.
“Minho!” Taemin eyes bulged out and Taemin ran to hide behind a tree.
Minho was chuckling as he lurked at Taemin like a crocodile.
“I’m done anyway!”Taemin peeked his head out and accidentally his eyes fall on the older male’s naked form and his cheeks were heating, his heart palpitating and his palm sweaty.
When he was assured the man had went away, he quickly jumped in the water, with the image repeating like a slideshow.
A week later, when their food supplies had run low and their time was up, as a farewell gift a feast was held. The feast was provided by the chief, all of them; the human kind and the elves sat in a circle around the warm camp fire. Seemingly, there were no more boundaries between the two different creatures originated from different places and cultures. Elves and humans were interacting friendly and it was a pleasant scene for Minho.
Next to him, lay his cynosure staring upwards to the constellation with his eyes glinting brighter than the stars. He moved closer and emulated the latter’s action, and somehow their fingers were tangling with together.
“You’re prettier than those stars.”Minho commented and even in the dark, he could see the younger’s cheek were red.
“You do realise that we can’t be together, right?”Taemin asked, tilting his head to the side, aligning their eyes together.
“Let’s just enjoy today.”Minho had buried the topic, at the moment he only wanted to savour the moment.
But Taemin was a nerve wreck, that night when the forest was only accompanied by the sound of owl’s hooting and the crickets, Taemin cried his heart out; knowing tomorrow would be the day of separation.
~
The next day, just like the time they had set out for this journey, the group bid farewell, hugging their newfound friends and thanking the chief for his kindness.
“So, this is goodbye.”Taemin muttered with his head down casted, hiding his swollen eyes due to the excessive crying.
“Yeah, take care.”Minho was scratching his head, with the nausea of separation rising to his throat and the tears were accumulated, ready to fall.
They hugged tightly, never wanted to let each other go, but the time of separation was nearing and Minho was called by his group, with a chaste kiss on Taemin’s lips, he left.
~
The group was slowly far away from the hamlet, and the elves had subsided returning to their routine. Taemin was stubbornly standing there, with his fingers swiping of the beads of tears.
“Tae,he’s not coming back.”Onew tapped his shoulder in form of comfort, urging him to stop hoping. Taemin shook his head, when suddenly he heard loud crunches of the leaves, his head urgently stood straight.
“MINHO!”He shouted joyfully.
Minho took him by surprise, sweeping him off his feet and placed a passionate kiss on his lips. It was a mess of a lot of kissing and “I’ll never leave you.”When they were calm and composed, they hugged.
“Why did you return?”Taemin asked inhaling the masculine scent as his nose nuzzled on Minho’s shoulder blade.
“There’s nothing for me there as important as you are.”
I see me through your eyes
Breathing new life, flying high
Your love shines the way into paradise
So I offer my life, I offer my love, for you
