Crystal Castles

spoonless and I had a conversation early last year about a genre of music from our youth called Freestyle.  There's a band P came across recently called Crystal Castles that we've been listening to a bunch, and one particular song, Crimewave has a lot of Freestyle elements in it, with some really cool modern touches.  Just thought I'd share ( Read more... )

hmm... Crimewave and Untrust Us don't really remind me of freestyle much for some reason. I was very impressed with Courtship though, and it also reminds me more of freestyle sounds.

There's some kind of instrument in the background, though, that I kept trying to place where I'd heard it before. Best I can come up with, it's reminding me of the computerish sound in the background of this song:

I had posted a link to the above song a while back in my journal, but recently someone came out with a pretty damn good acoustic cover... and now I think I like the cover better than the original, even though it is missing the cool computerishy sound:

Actually, I didn't mean to imply that "Untrust Us" was freestyle-ish. Sorry for being unclear there. I was initially surprised that you didn't hear it in "Crimewave," but I can't put my finger specifically on what it is that reminds me of it, so it may be more an impression for me.

I'm glad you enjoyed "Courtship", though. And yes, that's the same synth sound. Good ear! That sounds like the kind of song I'd need to hear at a club, though, because here at my desk it's hard to take the lyrics seriously.

On that note, I need to post some Steedlord soon. It's over-the-top ridiculous in some ways, but somehow also manages to be completely brilliant. I'll have to dig up some video links.
