Eventually I'll have good things to report, but for now...

FEMA came out at the last minute today to inspect the basement. They checked it out and acknowledge that there is damage, but have denied our application for assistance. Apparently they are only focusing on people who have lost their homes, despite there being hundreds, if not thousands of people like us who have minor damage, but no flood ( Read more... )

I agree that they should get as much assistance as possible. But why can't the government help everyone affected here, at least as much as they can? Isn't this part of the reason we pay taxes?

Trust me. The government is hurting right now. The economy is so bad that even the hardcore liberals are really freaking out at the idea of raising taxes and being subsequently booted out of office.

And since right now there's a ton of disasters going on everywhere... ALL relief organizations are currently massively understaffed and underfunded because no one is donating to the nonprofits (no $$) and there's no way to garner extra tax revenue to help the feds out.

I know this because I work at the Red Cross and we're hurting even more than FEMA if possible. It suckkkkkks. I'm really sorry your home is so damaged. I'll be thinking positive things for you so that hopefully you don't have to dip into your savings or borrow to fix this. <333

Yeah, you're right. I had briefly forgotten in the midst of being angry just how badly other organizations and charities are doing right now. They've been saying on the local news that the Red Cross here (maybe even nation wide, I can't remember exactly) is going into debt to continue helping the community get back on it's feet.

I'm right there with the others unable to donate, too. Oh god, you know I would if I could... but we are so broke right now. Gas prices don't help in the slightest. :S

It does suck, but I suppose things could be worse. ♥

Oh, I know you would. I'm not at all criticizing you--you guys aren't exactly in a great spot right now. Just explaining why FEMA is acting seemingly useless... it's so hard for both sides.

I really hope this all works out for you soon!!!

We had a similar problem about 10 years ago in our home. FEMA came out and told us there was nothing they could do because we signed onto the house knowing that we were under sea level. (to my understanding they did not put that in the common knowledge bracket in our contract)

I will keep my thoughts and fingers crossed for you and send my love <3

I meant to comment yesterday. I had thought it interesting in that when family try doing something nice for you, it sometimes ends up being worse, over your head, or not worth it in the end. I have my dad's house as you know, and even though it is nicer financially - it's a big headache to care for (most people don't realize and just go "but you are so lucky to have that option!")! Everyone means well but it doesn't mean it is in your best interest. I hope things go more smoothly for you.
