I visited a fascinating town called New Norcia. (Note: the section on the Abbey's history at the end of the Wikipedia article is... well... outrageously one-sided, apologetic and racist. I might try and do something about that later... but the photos are still good.)

I found the source of all that guff about the Benedictines bringing the cannibal savages out of darkness in the New Norcia Wikipedia article. It's a quote from a Catholic encyclopaedia, dating back to 1910. Given that, I can't say the attitudes it promulgates are at all surprising - I've read Arthur Mee's secular "Encyclopaedia for Children" from the '20s, which is equally rich with European cultural supremacism.

Article still needs a rewrite, though. :)
