just wondering

If Sapphire, Steel or one of the other agents is destroyed (assuming this is possible), does the next agent assume the same visage or does (s)he look different? Would the other agents know there's been a replacement made or would it even matter?

I think they're self-aware and human-like enough that they'd notice a difference and it would matter. They seem to definitely care about each other on some level

I just wondered because Steel seemed so different in the third assignment... then I thought, "New model, same look?"

Could be. ;) Personally, I always found it fascinating how Sapphire would have her hair and clothes totally different every story and still stay with the blue theme.

She did have a variety of looks, didn't she? Whoops, okay, Steel, here's a new one, try not to muck this one up...

I also think they are distinct individuals just like us, with their own physical appearance and character. And, yes, with their own feelings, too. They have shown that often enough. Steel, too, despite his efforts not to. So I would think that Sapphire or Steel would be devastated if he or she were to lose his or her partner. And I don't think they would be replicated. Replaced, yes, but not cloned.

What would the new Steel or Sapphire look like - is it up to the new agent to pick a visage or is one assigned?

I don't think there would be a new Steel or Sapphire. Their individuality cannot be replicated, just like us. Or so I like to think...

There just seemed to be an inconsistency, not huge, but still there and it started me wondering. you know how I get when I start to wonder about things...

In Big Finish audio plays there were two "sets" of Sapphire and Steel. One for most part of the plays and one just for one of them. I don't want to be spoiler so I can't explain it properly. But I can assume that if agent disappears for a long time he will be replaced. The new one will have a new personality, appearance, and sort of a memory about previous life, but he will not has previous experience. So if Big Finish plays are canon than is like sort of regeneration in Doctor Who.

Ah, and the regeneration of the Doctor was probably one of the most clever things ever come up with. Thanks!
