fandom as a mediaeval society.

It really brightens my day to see what people have to say about each other in the fandom. This place has its share of drama, sure, and sometimes it gets out of control (like when it bleeds onto metafilter and fark). But usually we take care of ourselves - a self-regulating society. In many ways, it's not unlike an anarcho-syndicalist commune early ( Read more... )

Just a resident hermit here. :) I like your idea of comparing the fandom to a somewhat fuedal society. It got me thinking that you could further the analogy to say that the characters of the HP books act as a kind of royalty and members of the fandom their serfs. As a fandom, we spend hours discussing them, reading and writing fanfic about them, etc.
I realize I just a horrible job of explaining that, but I'll blame it on the lateness of the hour.
Here via Hogwarts Today, btw.

*laughs* Glad you could stop in for some cheese and provisions, good hermit! ;D

That's a very fair comparison to make, I think. HP characters as the members of the court - and we're always discussing their intrigues and plots, and everything they do affects us. Hmm. :D I think I got what you were attempting to put across. They're also far removed from our every day realities, yet still influential parts of our lives.

Cheers!

This was just a brilliant and thorough comparison - well done! Interesting thought especially about the guilds.

Here via and glad to read this. I tend not to fall too deeply into fandom itself, though i have an OTT and write a little something for it nearly every day, lately. But I do have favorite authors or artists in various places, and have never had a framework to work out what was similar about them for me. Thank you for this.

You're most welcome! I'm glad this framework seems to work for most people. :D
