"I remember feeling panicked inside but on the outside I was calm and pro-active. Maybe all the stuff in my childhood had something to do with that. "

I think it's just an intrinsic parent thing. You can't freak out, because it'll make the kid freak out and things get worse. But it does help that you'd seen it all before.

I am confident that you will not impale your children, leave them on the freeway or any other of the Howard Williams Fathering Practices scenarios. However, there is still so much that can happen even if a parent is being their most careful, and now you posess that magical intrinsic parent thing. So when one or both of your boys climb into the oven and you are running over to them, ever fiber of your being screaming "oh nooo! my head is exploding with the immenseness of this emergency"... you will surely simply remove them from the oven, brush off the tiny charred pieces of their clothing and calmly explain to them why this is not a good idea. Fun! :-)

I thought it was bad that my dad left me at a rest area when I was 14 - he didn't realize I had gotten out of the van - didn't bother to check either.

oh sheesh, that's bad if they don't check. Hopefully, it was least a rest area with good stuff in the candy vending machine, and you with a pocket full of quarters!

oh, no, please do feel free to crack up, my sisters alwasy do!
The funny thing is that my Dad, bless his heart, took even worse care of himself. He once cut his thumb almost all the way through and sort of stuck it back on, wrapped it up and waited for it to "grow back together". He kept insisting that it would and we were all sure it would turn green and fall off. But sure enough, it was fine after a few weeks. He's some sort of warped pioneer man or something, I'm lucky I'm alive today :-)
