I have one of those small gateway netbooks. It takes longer to do things with it, but I can browse and run basic office and programming software on it, so it suits my purposes fine, especially for its price.
I hear there is a "gamer netbook" out there, I think it's Asus brand. That may have a little more oomph to it.
I'm a bit lost on modern portables. A lot of lightweight 'netbooks' have very robust online capabilities, but weaker onboard (offline) strengths. And a lot of robust workstation platforms have adequate but unimpressive online capabilities. It all depends on what you want your machine to do

A very gently used Dell Inspiron has come my way, and I will likely option it for the scandalously low price suggested. If it wasn't for that, I'd be all over the new Toshiba I saw at Staples a couple weeks ago.
