Went and saw Sunshine last night with
the_muso.
Much better than I was expecting. We were supposed to go and see TMNT (squee!) but apparently that started at 8:45 and I thought the site said 9.20... Anway, I'll just blame them so I don't feel bad :D:P
Kudos:
Sunshine was actually quite good. I wasn't planning on seeing it at the movies, but I'm really glad I did. It wasn't your typical 'save the world from space' kind of movie. It had no Presidents, no world leaders, no shots of crowds of people watching with hopeful expressions on their face. It was very much about the characters and the human psyche.
The special effects were fantastic, especially on the mirrors. But my favourite definately has to be where you can see the Sun from the Observation deck. The Sun is amazing, so kudos to the SFX team.
The suspense and creepiness factor were maintained at a perfect level during the intial entry into the Icarus I, especially when they split up and you were just waiting for something/someone to jump out. And then TPTB upped it to even greater levels and managed to keep it there when the twist showed itself. And what a truly disgusting and horryfying looking twist it was. The fact that we never really saw his face properly, his voice and the fact he was completely insane (which I think is the most scary thing ever) made him a great addition. Kudos again! My favourite creepy/suspenseful bit was when Capa was checking the payload after they'd found Trey dead and Icarus was saying that they didn't have enough oxygen to survive till the payload dropoff point. At which point it's completely dark, you can only see Capa's face, and when Icarus confirms there are 5 people not 4 on board and Capa asks Icarus to identify the location of the 5th person I totally expected him to be standing behind him. The suspense in that bit was done really well.
And as terrible as this sounds (:P) I liked that none of them made it. I actually liked the fact that they accepted the fact that they weren't going to make it back to Earth and got on with the job they were there to do. They didn't think of themselves at all (except Harvey but I'll talk more about him later) they were only concerned with the fact that billions of people were depending on them. To me, that shows such a genuine selflessness that is rare to find and I think that aspect is best seen through the character of Mace. First when he had the courage to speak his mind in the dining room, then again when they were suiting Capa up on the Icarus I. I forget the exact words but it was something along the lines of "We're lower priority then him. He is the only one that understands the payload, he is the only one that can work it". Then again when he freezes to death after reinstating the cells so that Icarus could function again.
Non-kudos:
I was going to mention the science behind the movie, but then I figured: why? Why would you care about that? It's a freaking movie. And who is to say it can or cannot work? It was more about the characters and their reactions anyway.
The fact that Harvey was 2iC completely baffled and annoyed me. As stated, he was a comms officer. He obviously hadn't had any sort of command position before. The fact that he was going to jeopardise the entire mission because he thought that being Captain gave him the right to wear the only EVA suit was just downright pathetic. And it really annoyed me that TPTB thought a person like that could pull off a psyche profile that would allow him to be put in such a responsible position. Give your characters some sort of sense at least. But he got his soon after anyway.
I'm pretty sure there was something else that bugged me, but atm I can't remember what that was...
And we wont mention the seriously hot hot HOT guy that came down the stairs while
the_muso and I were chatting. There was just silence as we both spotted him. I was in AWE!
