One Piece Vol 7

Mostly worth reading for the shipwreck backstory. Pearl and Krieg, why are you so boring.

Volume 7

54

Pearl: even more tedious than Krieg himself. (There really needs to be a "most boring OP villain ever" poll.)

Love to see Sanji in awesome mode. He spends too much time in "Let's make fun of Sanji the horn-dog" mode. [Fishman Island]Especially lately.

55

Cover arc: LOL, the funeral for Buggy's "parts." (The affection of this strange crew for their strange captain is really rather endearing.)

What's with the whole "born in the jungle" routine? Is there supposed to be some point to that?

Pearl can set himself on fire when he senses danger, big deal.

Gin takes Zeff hostage.

56

Zeff calling Sanji "baby eggplant" (chibi-nasu) is kind of adorable. Even though it infuriates Sanji every time.

Sanji willingly allowing Pearl to beat the crap out of him rather than fight back and risk Zeff's life is... sweet, in a sick kind of way.

"This ship is that geezer's treasure." <3

Sanji flashback!

Seriously, I am DYING to know what Sanji was doing as a cook's apprentice on the "passenger ship Orbit" with no parents in sight, at the age of 10.

The dream of All Blue. Honestly, I find this to be one of the less compelling among the Strawhat dreams. [Fishman Island]Maybe Oda does too, since half the time Sanji seems to think his real dream is to die happy seeing naked mermaids. It's cute that he and Zeff share it, though.

The other cooks might not believe in the All-Blue, but they understand better than Sanji the value of not wasting food at sea.

I had forgotten that Zeff was the captain of the pirate ship that attacked Sanji's ship. I think maybe I thought Sanji was on Zeff's ship in the first place, or something.

57

They were in the East Blue when Sanji's ship was attacked, right? It says that Zeff was just "back" from the Grand Line.

Zeff steals treasure, but he never steals food.

Zeff's pirates don't believe in the All-Blue, either.

The shipwreck backstory ;_;

Zeff comments that his own ship was definitely wrecked, but he hasn't seen any bodies from his own crew.

Wow, they actually show Zeff cutting his own leg off. (I mean, I knew he did it, but I forgot that they SHOWED it.) In volume 15, there's an SBS with Oda commenting that he's glad they changed that for the anime because it's so inappropriate for younger children. ("Eat your own leg! Kids, don't try this at home!")

58

Zeff doesn't want to go on searching for All Blue without his nakama, so he dreams of founding a restaurant at sea instead.

I seriously do not believe they survived on that island for 85 days.

I missed that the ship that eventually rescued them is the same one that failed to pick them up on the fifth day. *shiver*

Sanji and the kuso-jiji have an adorably dysfunctional relationship, but man, it's like the most extreme version of the man-cave father-son relationship imaginable. I WILL EAT MY OWN FLESH RATHER THAN TALK ABOUT MY FEELINGS.

59

And back to Pearl, yawn. Wake me up when it's over.

Luffy's solution to the hostage dilemma: sink the ship! (Or smash the fin, at least.)

Aw, Luffy flashing back on Shank's sacrifice when he tells Sanji not to throw his life away. ("Dying is no way to repay a debt!")

Gin takes Pearl out -- so that he can kill his benefactor (Sanji) with his own hand.

Gin's true rank (battalion commander) revealed.

60

Cover arc: LOL the "Ritchie Pirate Gang."

Krieg unveils his ultimate weapon, MH5. (Or not -- it's a trick, at first.)

Sanji vs Gin; Luffy vs. Krieg. (I swear I start to tune out as soon as the battle match-ups get called.)

61

Sanji vs Gin and Luffy vs. Krieg, continued.

Gin is the only interesting element in this insanely dull battle. I don't get him, but his actions are never predictable.

Krieg promoted him because he was a merciless killer - but he seems to be a man of honor. He claims the privilege of fighting Sanji, but when he has him cornered, he can’t bring himself to deal the fatal blow. Krieg tries to kill him, and yet he remains loyal, to a boss who doesn’t even remotely deserve his loyalty. He's an enigma.

62

Krieg orders Gin to throw away his own mask, and he OBEYS, wtf.

Gin sacrifices himself to save Luffy and Sanji.

Sanji to Gin: "You picked the wrong man to follow." I wonder if that's the whole point of Gin's character arc -- that Gin's many admirable traits are almost completely wasted because he's chosen to follow an unworthy leader. Whereas, although Luffy appears to be a complete and total idiot, those who follow him have a way of finding their true selves.
