One Piece Vol 8

Jun 15, 2012 20:53

This one almost got away from me -- I lost track of days and thought the next posting was due Saturday.

Goodbye Baratie, hello Arlong Park (at last!). Without question, Arlong Park is where the series really hits its stride.

Sorry to be so late to this post. This week has been a bit busy, haha.

You can't TELL me his character isn't coming back someday.

Hopefully he'll have ditched Krieg by then. >.>

Liffey loves riding on whatever ornament sticks off the front of a ship.

(lol, what happened to Luffy's name?) My favorite part of this is the way he assumes everyone else wants to sit there, too. ("You can't sit here, this is my seat!")

Yosaku explains that the Grand Line is ruled by three great powers, of which the "Seven Warlords of the Sea" is (are?) one.

Hmm, I read this a little differently. I don't have the book with me to quote, but the line is something like "There are three ruling powers that are the reason the Grand Line is called a "pirates' graveyard." That might leave room for some other ruling powers that don't necessarily go after pirates.

[Fishman Island]I laughed when Yosaku stopped in the middle of his history lesson because Luffy and Sanji were getting bored. We had to wait like 60 volumes because of them! (Not that it would have meant much before... )

Have you got to the end of Fishman Island in the currently running manga? Don't read in email, if so sara_tanaquil June 20 2012, 14:23:56 UTC

AMEN.

what happened to Luffy's name?

LOL, I have no idea! I think I was composing that comment on my iphone in iaWriter or something, the spell check must have run mad. I can't believe I haven't noticed it in all this time, because I usually obsessively re-read my own posts looking for typos.

Hmm, I read this a little differently.

I agree (also from memory) that your quote is closer to literal, but I'm not sure what difference that makes to the interpretation? I should quit being lazy and just go look up the conversation in volume 25 where they talk about the balance of powers on the Grand Line.

[Fishman Island]Re: the history lesson, LOL, so true. Pay attention to your lessons, Luffy... )

Haha, I am actually not at the end of the Fishman Island arc, so thanks for the warning. I was actually a couple volumes behind when I started my re-read, so I'm looking forward to getting there...eventually. (Almost halfway now! But taking a break because my June manga just got here. Skypeia not NEARLY as bad as I remembered. It's sort of funny how different my reading of Robin is this time around.)

I'm not sure what difference that makes to the interpretation?

Oh, I think I misread what you wrote under the spoiler. I thought you were trying to figure out why there were only three powers when we've met so many, but I see now that you've just lumped a bunch in with "World Government." Don't know what I was thinking, sorry. (Also, I'm not sure that I remember this conversation in volume 25, so if you look it up, point it out to me, please?)

LOL, it's not a huge spoiler, but skip it, in that case. I was just commenting on a further example of Luffy's inability to listen to his history lessons.

[Volume 25]The specific reference to "three great world powers" is in the scene where the Gorousei are introduced, in chapter 233. The three powers are not explicitly named, but they are definitely talking about the Shichibukai and the Four Emperors, at least; that would tend to imply that the Gorousei themselves (= World Gov't) are the third. There might be some more stuff in chapter 234, where the Shichibukai are all lounging around acting like rebellious punks (the ones that showed up, at least). I LOVE those two chapters, it's unbelievable how much expositiony/foreshadowy stuff got squashed into those few pages. And I remember being completely and utterly baffled by those same chapters the first time through.

[Skypeia]How far are you into Skypeia now? I am somewhere around volume 28 (didn't make much progress for this last week). I agree that it is far more interesting when you realize how much ... )

Luffy loves riding on whatever ornament sticks off the front of a ship. I think he's hoping to get to the destination just that little bit faster.

That has got to be it. *immediately adopts as headcanon*

I had to go back to check when I commented on volume 7, because it seemed like there was a huuuuge delay between that and my reading volume 8 today, but it has only been two days.

I was just so bored by the fight in 7 that I couldn't push myself to continue to 8. When I finally did, it was my worst shounen manga fight nightmare: a seemingly unending cycle of "OMG, the kid defeated our awesome boss" and "no, wait, boss has an even MORE AWESOME weapon/technique that he hasn't used yet." For the longest time, I thought I was going to have nothing to talk with you about.

He also comments on Luffy's "conviction"

Sadly, this gets translated as "grit."

he looks so cute when he's waving his hands around telling Luffy all about All Blue)

Doesn't he?!! I'm not even a big Sanji fan (yet); I just love how he looks like an enthusiastic little kid there. That's who we are when we follow our dreams.

Luffy's Nami fish

Luffy's doodles are when the volume started to turn around for me. I love when artists have their characters be bad artists.

Oh god, yes. T_T

The one thing I can honestly say I don't like about One Piece is the shounen fight formula, which is, well, formulaic. (Every single arc will have the team splitting up so that a bunch of lesser crew fights can lead up to the big boss fight.) Fortunately, the fight sequences are very rarely as boring as Pearl and Krieg (it depends on which villains you find amusing, really).

Sadly, this gets translated as "grit."

Am about to go out, so I don't have time to go check the whole passage in the original, but I remember that there was at least one other word used besides 信念 where I agreed with Viz that the best translation would be grit. It's too bad they didn't call out "convinction" in particular with a different translation, but it's a while before that word becomes as important as it is later (and it's a hard word to translate even if you are paying special attention to it).

I love when artists have their characters be bad artists.Luffy's art is the WORST. (His original ( ... )

Huh? That didn't make it into the translation at all. Are you extrapolating (in the trans., Usopp says she's not worth finding or some such), or did Viz miss a character-building joke?Ah, I found it. I do think Viz missed out on a good character moment here ( ... )

Thank you for taking the time to compare the two versions. Yeah, the English is weak there.

a former fan translator who is very highly regarded in the fandom community, and he does a terrific job.

You know how much I hate scanlations (even though I now read them), but I find something really inspirational in the idea of fan translators being hired by the commercial companies. Not in the DMP sense of "churn out stuff that we'll charge for and pay you if it ever makes a profit, which it won't, so neener, morons" but in this, what I assume is a freelancer role. I mean, how awesome to get paid for doing what you love.

Luffy's Nami fish LOL FOREVER

[Fishman Island]
The best thing about this is that it's revealed in an SBS that Oda drew put this creature(?) in the background of a scene in Fishman Island. This made me laugh really, REALLY hard.

Similarly, the "super-buoyant wood" that he makes up as an explanation for why Mr. 3 is floating in Alabasta is how ships get back to the surface from Fishman Island. (lol)

It kind of makes me wince now when Zoro calls Arlong "you half-fish bastard" (hangyo-yarou).

Agh, yes. And I agree that Arlong isn't sympathetic, exactly, but...well, he's not a one-dimensional villain, that's for sure.
