One Piece Vol 10

Shounen fight formula to the max (Arlong Park mix). Though the boss fight with Luffy vs. Arlong is mostly in the next volume.

VOLUME 10

82

"How dare you make our navigator cry!" <3

Mohmoo taking one look at Sanji & Luffy and turning to run for the hills is one of my favorite One Piece moments ever. ("Oh, it's just him?")

[Shabondy]Did Arlong use conqueror's haki to make Mohmoo turn back and fight? I always assumed Mohmoo turned back because he was afraid of Arlong (which would also make sense), but this is the first time I noticed the bloodshot eyes (compare the eyes of the "local sea monster" in chapter 1). If so, it's interesting to note that Arlong can use haki.

I died laughing the first time I saw the Gomu-Gomu no Pinwheel (the technique Luffy uses to take out poor Mohmoo). Mainly because I had gone to a ridiculous amount of trouble during the JLPT years to memorize the difference between "pinwheel" and "windmill", which are written with the same kanji but pronounced differently. So the minute Luffy yelled "Gomu-gomu no... kazaguruma!" in the anime, I lost it, even before the subtitle came up.

Cover arc: Coby & Helmeppo. Go become a man, Coby! <3

[Marineford]This is another story that grew on me over time, especially after we see a more mature Coby at Enies Lobby and Marineford.

Luffy trying to tell the others that his feet are stuck, LOL. (Strategy is not Luffy's strong point.)

Sanji: "Well, I picked a hell of a captain to follow." Zoro: "I feel your pain."

Usopp fights, he runs. He fights, he runs... (LOL villager commentary.)

Good lord, I had completely forgotten the part where Luffy spends like half a volume underwater so Zoro and Sanji can have their fights first. (Arlong picks him up, cement block and all, and tosses him into the harbor.)

84

Sanji notices right away that Zoro is having trouble with Hachi because he's still recovering from the wound Mihawk gave him.

Hachi asks Zoro why he's only got one sword (answer: because he lost two in the fight with Mihawk).

Gen-san and Nojiko volunteer to try to help Luffy while Zoro and Sanji are busy with their fights.

Fishman karate! <3

[Fishman Island]No particular love for Kuroubi, but he uses the same techniques Jinbei does.

Hey, now that I actually know a little about karate, the idea of a 40th-degree black belt is pretty scary. Damn.

Aha, I just got why Hachi says he's the best swordsman on Fishman Island, save one.

[Fishman Island]The best would be Hyouzou, the one Zoro beats so easily in chapter 600-something. Seriously, how much of this has Oda got sketched out in advance? Does he know what all the crew will be eating for breakfast in chapter 900?

Zoro asks Johnny and Yosaku to lend him their swords, so he can fight three-sword-style.

Sanji comparing the fishman's punches unfavorably to Zeff's kicks: "If that was 40th degree, the old fart's kicks must have been 400th degree." <3

LOL, chapter 83 and 84 both end with an identical panel of Usopp screaming and running away from Chuu. (And he's stilllll running!)

85

Zoro vs. Hachi (three-sword style meets six-sword style).

Gen-san and Nojiko try to smash the cement block that's keeping Luffy on the ocean floor, but can't make any progress -- until they both have an idea on how to keep him alive until they can get him free.

86

Sanji vs. Kuroobi (underwater!).

Sanji realizes that Gen-san and Nojiko are keeping Luffy alive by stretching his head up to the surface and holding it above water.

LOL, Johnny & Yosaku are waiting anxiously for the outcome, wondering what happened to "Nami no aneki no aneki-tachi." ("Nami-sis' big sis and co." Meaning, Nojiko and Gen-san. This is perfectly correct Japanese, but it sounds so funny.)

Sanji finally escapes Kuroubi and emerges from the water to reassure Zoro. "Don't worry, Luffy's fine. Well, half of him is." "HALF of him?"

Sanji finishes Kuroubi off with a few good kicks. "I take it you won't be needing dessert."

87

Usopp vs. Chuu.

Usopp's ketchup star. <3 ("Sure-kill lie-down-and-play-dead!")

And, yet again, his courage wins out over his fear.

[Water 7/Enies Lobby]
Usopp's increasingly shamefaced dialogue with himself when he's trying to rationalize his cowardice (before he stands up and challenges Chuu) is uncomfortably reminiscent of the lines he keeps trying out after the quarrel with Luffy at Water 7. He's all the more likable as a character because his weaknesses are as consistent as his strengths.

His fear that he's not worthy to sail on the same ship as the others is a glance forward to Water 7, as well.

Usopp's Rubber Band of Doom!

[Cover arc: From the Decks of the World]Usopp's statue in Skypiea's Rubber Band Land is one of my favorite things EVER.

Aw, Usopp soliloquizing (is that a word?) to Kaya and Usopp's ex-pirate gang: "I went to sea to become a real pirate! Pirate playtime... is OVER!" (That's the title of the chapter: 終わったんだ!!)

88

Usopp is so happy when he finally defeats Chuu. (You're the man, Usopp!)

It really says something about how traumatized Nami was that it takes this long for her to follow them and join the fight.

Oooh, the villagers didn't know that Nami repeatedly tried to assassinate Arlong. (And, wow, that's kind of chilling when you think about it. Fridge horror.)

[Alabasta]Nami and Robin have more in common than I realized.

Aw, so proud of Nami when she rejects Arlong's last offer. "Sorry, everyone! Die with me, ok?"

For all Sanji and Zoro spend most of their time trying to kill each other, they fight so well together. (Love that Sanji understands Zoro's thumbs-down code perfectly. "30 seconds, I won't last longer than that." "That'll be plenty!")

Usopp arrives to play backup cheerleader squad. ("I've got your back!" [援護は任せろ!] is his catchphrase.) LOL, him peeking through the hole in the wall to cheer them on.

Luffy finally starts to wake up, and Sanji dives into the water to break the cement block and free him.

89

Hee, Yosaku waving little pirate flags while cheering Zoro on.

The first thing Luffy notices when he regains consciousness is that Gen-san isn't wearing his pinwheel hat.

Nami's reaction to Zoro's wounds, youch -- she wasn't around to see the fight with Mihawk.

And, at last, Luffy's back in the fight. (Luffy, to Zoro: "Switch!!")

Zoro, after being flung halfway to the next town: "I'm going to kill that guy!" LOL. Zoro has a hard life.

90

LOL, Luffy trying to "guess" the difference between him and Arlong. ("Jaw? Gills?" "I think he's serious.")

Luffy's speech about how he can't do everything himself. <3 ("I can't use a sword, or steer a ship, or cook! And I can't lie!" Usopp: "HEY.")
