One Piece Vol 22

Longest. Twenty-nine minutes and thirty seconds. Ever.

(But, I LOVE this volume. The only thing better than volume 22 is volume 23.)

Volume 22 )

(Seriously, someone has to have eaten the Stop Time fruit, because WTF, Odacchi.)

("We lost a lot of time back there!" OK, at this point, I think the clock is actually running backwards, because the countdown is just ridiculous.)

[Davy Beck Fight]Foxy was secretly there all along! The unhailed saviour of Alabasta.

"If this was still her country, she'd be able to smile more!" Aw, Luffy.

<3333

Followed up with "Blood hardens sand, too", and that look on Luffy's face. All dark-eyed and serious and unyielding. Gah.

[Fishman Island]
Chaka is horrified to realize that they've drunk the "power water" (?) that grants temporary strength in exchange for shortening one's life. They have only minutes to live.

Hmmm, I wonder if this is somehow related to the ES pills used during Fishman Island? Both seem to be secret treasures(?) of the countries in question.

I figure it's supposed to be a playground-level exchange, like "I know you are, but what am I?"

Pretty much. Or just a REALLY clumsy way for Usopp to pretend he's not crying.

Luffy says he'll be fine. (He's eaten plenty of meat!) + "What's wrong? I ate plenty of meat.

Hee!

"Those marines just kept saying "North! North!", so I went up."

Oh, Zoro. Never change.

Oh, forgot to say that the Swedish translator definitely took it as a playground reference, putting in a very common Swedish one in its place saying much the same thing.

also, this has absolutely nothing to do with volume 22, but I recall we were wondering about postal services in the world of One Piece? [Fishman Island]I re-read the chapters in vol 63 the other day (Viz translation), and I'd missed paying attention to 1) Den, brother of Tom, telling Franky that Kokoro has kept him updated on all that's happened in Water 7 through letters; and 2) in the flashback, Fisher Tiger is shown to have written Neptune and Otohime a letter revealing that he used to be a slave. So it seems that fishmen and merfolk at least have a working postal connection to Fishman Island. Maybe just specially trained fishes?

There's something so horrifying about this utterly pointless sacrifice

Agreed. My heart just breaks for these guys, even though I get Oda's point.

This might actually explain why Sanji came when the ducks reported that Usopp was in trouble, aw.

Well, it makes for sweet Sanji/Usopp nakamaing, but…Chopper! Alone! Bad Sanji!

(Aw, man, Viz translates ore-tachi as "I." Bad Viz!)

Their evil is almost incomprehensible.

Quick shot of someone in the distance, running and arguing over who's hurt worse

Geez, I know I'm a Zoro fangirl, but seriously Nami…he nearly bled to death. limp your way back to the palace.

Bad Hachi! Don't trade Keimi for a takoyaki recipe!

Wow. I thought I must have misunderstood that panel.

eight years old. The government considered her an extremely dangerous criminal and placed a 79 million beli bounty on her head before she disappeared.

Now she's younger than I thought. I thought she was in her 30s. Also…79 million? aren't the bounties usually round numbers?

Tashigi staggers to her feet.With a broken leg? ( ... )

Wow. I thought I must have misunderstood that panel.

Hachi is an interesting character. I find him very likeable, but he is definitely a bit... ethically challenged. When placed in a situation where he has to make a choice between doing the right thing and doing what he wants, he has a hard time not going for the instant gratification. But I think a lot of it is because he lacks the imagination to see where the consequences will lead. He is learning... slowly.

Now she's younger than I thought. I thought she was in her 30s. Also…79 million? aren't the bounties usually round numbers?

She is indeed 28 at this point, as the math would suggest.

Most bounties are round numbers, but I've seen odd numbers before. It seems like the higher-ups all get together in a room and compare the perceived threat level of the candidate with all the other bounties who are around the same threat level, and assign a number accordingly. We saw a glimpse of the process when Luffy got his first bounty back in volume 11.

With a broken leg? Damn!Given that ( ... )

Back at the palace, Crocodile mocks Luffy, saying that the gap between him and a Shichibukai is still too great.

Luffy: "So you're a Shichibukai, so what? In that case, I'm a Hachibukai!"

(He just replaced the number seven with the number eight. I know I write LOL a lot, but seriously, that made me laugh for at least two minutes. Hachibukai!)

Cobra is just 0__0 (and no wonder). "Who on earth is that man?"

Robin has to explain that Luffy is a pirate. "Looks like he saved the princess, again." Cobra realizes Luffy is one of the comrades Vivi told them about in her letter.

Luffy drinks all the water and becomes "Water Luffy." ("Oh crap, I'm leaking!")

God, this whole sequence. Killed me dead, then killed me again. XD Luffy + anything involving numbers = hilarity itself! I got to remind a couple of friends who'd forgotten about the part where Luffy starts leaking (through that hole Crocodile left in his stomach a while back, remember that? Oda did!) a little while ago. The look on their faces was fantastic ( ... )
