Off to Skypiea... after Oda hits us with the firehose, again. (I don't think any two chapters in all of One Piece are as dense as chs. 233 and 234. But wow, so much amazing stuff.)
All who are disturbed by the cannibalism, raise your hands.

Luffy immediately looks at Usopp. ("IT'S NOT ME!")
lol! <3
I find it impossible to make sense of Japanese numbers
Haha, same. I finally got to the point where I could remember that 一億円 is about one million dollars (well, when we're not at a 75 yen/dollar conversion rate...), but when it's just a straight number conversion I end up sitting there and going through the whole "万 is ten thousand, 十万 is a hundred thousand..." count.
A reference to Zoro, Y/N?
Since we have yet to see Mihawk show an interest in anything else (lol), I'd say yes.
Whitebeard's proper name is Edward Newgate
This bothers me. All the other names in the One Piece universe have the family name before given name order. So why does this one seem backwards?
a Hercules kabuto-mushi, LOLI love SO MUCH that Luffy runs off to town, kicks Bellamy's ass without breaking a sweat, and is late getting back because he's been beetle hunting. (And, like you, I love the moment when Luffy points up and says he'

I meant to answer this before. Isn't Blackbeard also Marshall D. Teach? It seems to be mostly the pirate names that are based on the names of famous historical European pirates. I forget if there are any other similar examples.
I agree, it is weird, but then I don't really understand how Japanese people feel about the switching around of names in the first place.
I mean, I understand how the rule is supposed to work, but I see so many instances of apparently cavalier treatment of which order names come in in which context that I wonder if there's a degree of elasticity in the Japanese attitude to names that westerners just don't understand. It's sort of the same way I feel about the apparently indifference of most Japanese to the consistent and correct use of any one romaji system -- mix 'em all up and spell the same word three different ways, why not?
Also among the unanswered questions on Sanji's origin: is it going to turn out to have massive plot significance at some later date, or was it purely a throwaway thing to give us a Straw Hat familiar with Norland's story? With One Piece you just never know.
It's interesting hearing about the manga version of these scenes after recently going back through the anime version. I don't think Tsuru or Kuma got a single line in the Marine HQ scene, though they're both present and named explicitly (maybe they didn't want to bother casting voice actors for them yet, when they'd get a couple of lines each and then not be needed again for years? IDK). Meanwhile, over on Whitebeard's ship, you can see the characters who are (in retrospect) clearly Marco and Jozu, but since the animators haven't realised they're going to be important later and don't have an official colour reference for them yet, Jozu is mysteriously white and Marco has black hair. Oda's love of cameoing characters years before we see them in action is really impressive from a

Oda's love of cameoing characters years before we see them in action is really impressive from a planning perspective, but it must be a real headache for the animators.
I know, LOL, go back and watch the episode where Rayleigh is smacking down Shanks and Buggy for fighting (what was that, episode 8 or something?). Young Rayleigh is pitch-perfect in the manga, but he looks very weird in the anime. Poor animators.
I spotted Marco in the manga, but missed Jozu. Will have to go back and look for that again!
I'd go with Luffy, and Zoro by logical extension.
That's right, I forgot Mihawk was interested enough in Luffy to bring his wanted poster to Shanks' attention. He did seem intrigued when Luffy told him his ambition was to be pirate king.
fffff, why do I suddenly feel the need to start drawing diagrams to keep track of it all?
I've been feeling the need to keep charts and diagrams for volumes. (And I haven't even started that list of Luffy's nicknames yet.)
All who are disturbed by the cannibalism, raise your hands.
They ate Zoro's ambiguous octopus friend. Nothing will horrify me ever again...until I see Wapol's cape in volume 26.
Sigh... Wapol, no less tedious in his cover arc.
I have to admit, I had no idea whose cover arc this was going to be based on the first image, so I kind of enjoyed the mystery here. Once it was revealed, I was bored (and disgusted...he's wearing that poor snow-hippo thing!) until the one cover with his old kingdom. I suppose I could wait 'til volume 26 to comment on that. But I have so much love for it, it just spills over here. *spilly love*
The ship flies up, headed straight for the layer of storm cloud. Nami says that if Sky Island exists, it'll be on the other side of that cloud.
TBCMost awesome ending of a manga volume ever. I had to go straight on to volume 26, where Oda finally managed to stop me with his deadly dull dials, but right here, right now, we're SAILING TO THE SKY. (Okay, LOL as I realize that's the title of the chapter

Oh, god, how did I not notice that Wapol was wearing the hippo? I must have blocked it out, because EW. Like I needed another reason to hate Wapol.
(Agreed, the one panel with the cover updating us on Drum Island was worth the entire Wapol cover arc tediosity. Love!)
There are moments in Skypiea when the wonder of SAILING TO THE SKY overcomes all the dullness (to me) of the worldbuilding within. Only moments... but they're good ones.
Chopper is never allowed to grow up EVER. (Fortunately, I think he's constitutionally programmed to be wide-eyed with wonder at the world. Hiluluk had that, all his life.)
The early seeds on the world gov't were just too much for me to process.
Honestly, you are not alone. Part of it might be down to translation, but mostly it's just too much to process all at once. I remember reading these chapters and just going ".... what?" (The introduction of the Gorousei, in particular, was where I just threw my hands in the air and gave up.) I don't think it is possible to appreciate them except in retrospect
