So, some One Piece discussions while we were in Japan inspired me to try to tackle the One Piece summaries again ( Read more... )

You're too fast! I only just got the book from the library today. Now I have to read it.

Gah! I forgot that the translation spells "Zoro" "Zolo." My eyes! My eyes!

Edit: Remind me, please? Why do the Shandian descendants have wings on their backs? Did they evolve?

Oh, what a great question! I never noticed that - or it never occurred to me to wonder why - the Shandians and the Skypieans both have wings. (I really cannot overemphasize my visual illiteracy when it comes to manga. And life, really.)

I had to go and do a bit of digging. Calgara has the wings, so it's not a feature the Shandians developed only after coming to the sky. According to the wiki, the reason is actually explained in a cover arc that comes up later (vols 44-49, apparently - wow, that's a long cover arc). Something to look forward to!

Hey, any thoughts on when you might see 33? I am so anxious to get past 33 so we can get on to the good part, but I don't want to rush you. How long can you keep 34-35 (if I am right in remembering that you were able to get those)?

It will happen suddenly, like finding volume 32 did, but I don't know when. Why don't you go ahead and post, and I'll catch up as soon as I get the book. I would really hate to lose momentum now.

I can keep 34-35 through February 11, with the possibility of one renewal if a hold isn't placed on the book by another patron.

Oda 'ships Makoto/Haru!

LOL!

Speaking of dolphins, I also love the tiny little snippet of Aokiji (on his bike) apologizing to the dolphin for startling it. おっとっと、ゴメンよ。

Yay, summaries!

Ace rescues both the commander and the top-secret intelligence, revealing his true flaming self. Wait, that sounds wrong.

Haha!

LOL, he even throws Usopp Rubber Band at it.

I love when he uses Usopp Rubber Band. XD

Was poneglyph spelled with that reading before? I can’t remember.

Darn, I can't remember either. I think this might be the first time?

Chopper: "Someone call a doctor! Wait, that's me!"

lol, Chopper. ♥

[Water 7]
("If we don’t take proper care of her once in a while, we'll get what's coming to us.") *cryyyyy*

Should this be spoiler marked? Maybe it's vague enough that it doesn't need it?

(also: *crryyyyyyyy*)

[Thriller Bark]
Luffy declares that it's high time they found a shipwright to join the crew to look after the Merry. (And, as always, just when everyone's surprised to hear Luffy say something that actually makes sense, Luffy adds "And a musician!")Ha, Luffy will get both of his wishes! I'm sort of sorry that this joke is over, though. Also, I sorta feel bad for anyone new coming in now, because the current crew

I wondered about that (the spoiler issue), but... we're pretty far into foreshadowing territory for that one by now.

I love the rubber band thing SO. MUCH. (covers mouth to prevent more spoilers)

This is true, though it still took me completely by surprise. On the other hand, it's hard to miss that new merchandise is using a different boat, like it's hard to miss the two new crew members. Avoiding spoilers is hard when you're this far behind the first run, I guess.

Yes. Yes, it is. So, about [Spoiler (click to open)]Zoro's eye...

FWIW, I don't casually notice things like the specific spoiler the two of you are referencing. But that has more to do with my failure to value that character properly [Spoiler (click to open)]as a character rather than a setting.

So, I read through the Skypeia finale and began the looong island chapter but had to stop when I nearly set fire to my kitchen when the milk for my oatmeal boiled over. (I should not be allowed near kitchens.) Some observations ( ... )

I still can't follow an action sequence worth a darn.

I KNOW. I hate that about shounen manga. Do ten year old boys somehow have a magic ability to figure this stuff out? But I agree, I just wait for the characters to comment on what's happening. Or watch the anime.

Two factions in a bitter feud for 400 years? Let's fix it with a party!

Happy end! Happy happy happy!

(Seriously, I agree, but... oh well. It makes for a nice story. And I love how he will occasionally go back and show how the people who were left behind are doing.)

I frankly would have had no idea what was going on with Robin and the poneglyphs if it weren't for your summaries. I get confused every time the poneglyphs come up, because there is so much that we're still not supposed to understand (plus there tend to be long lapses between reveals on that topic). It will be interesting to re-read those parts once more has been revealed. Although... let's just say that SOME things have had a lot more light cast on them in relatively recent arcs. Wow ( ... )

Woohoo, so glad to see your return!

"Fairy Vearth" turned out to be the moon, didn't it? And Enel still went there in the end - the one defeated villain who still got what he wanted in this series (that I can think of, at least).

Below, Usopp and Robin are horrified by the fact that the earth is crumbling and the ruins with it, but Wiper (struggling back to his feet) is defiant. He says Enel can’t bring down (落とす) the earth. (The English translation makes it sound like he’s talking about the Shandian warriors throughout, but when he refers to the “history of the proud warriors of Shandora” and everything that follows, I think he’s talking about the earth itself - it endures, it gives birth, it nurtures its children. It’s ambiguous in Japanese, though.)

Your impression is how the Swedish translation renders this part, too.

I love the cover of this volume, btw. It looks so golden and happy.

Good point! Not that he deserved it. Jerk.

I like Crocodile more than I like Enel, and let me tell you, that's saying something.

I was kind of surprised that Enel just headed off to "Fairy Vearth"/the moon as if he hadn't just lost the fight, but did he really get everything he wanted? He was mumbling about how he wanted to blast them out of the sky so they wouldn't block his view, wasn't he? So there, Enel. No panoramic view for you.

What kind of cracks me up is that the story made such a big deal of needing to stop Enel before he headed off to create even more havoc on earth, and then it turns out he's not headed to earth at all. (But, of course, they also had to deal with him wanting to blow Skypiea out of the sky.)
