One Piece 38

Feb 22, 2014 12:53

This might be a little premature, because I'm not sure if mangaroo has had a chance to read 37 yet, but having finished a draft of 39, I'm starting to lose track of where I am. So, here is 38 for all my Monday morning commenters.

I may not have this right, but something is definitely wrong with the Viz translation, which makes no sense at all.

Just out of curiosity, what's the Viz translation? (Your interpretation sounds right to me.)

re: ミッツバロック - it's actually ミーツ "meet." (Google suggests it's used sort of in the sense of a track meet?) Anyway, it makes sense given in the next chapter it says they haven't met before.

Iceberg X Mouse 4VR

YES. (Why do I love the mouse so much? I don't know, but it's adorable, and they're adorable together. BFFs!)

"LUFFY! ZORO! SANJI! Psst… (tiny voice) Usopp, please come back!"

Chopper is my favorite forever. <3

I think it's even funnier in Japanese because "Usopp, please come back!" is written in this tiny, light print compared to the big bold font.

Did Viz not do the different font? Sad!

[39, I think?]
I didn't remember this guy at all

I didn't remember him either, but that's probably because I was too busy remembering how annoying pasta guy is. I think he might be my least favorite One Piece villain.

I… really don't know ( ... )

Thank you!! Jeez, how many times do I re-read and proofread these things and I still make so many Japanese mistakes?? But I really appreciate you catching them.

I'm kind of sad I don't get to keep the "3" pun, because I was kind of amused by that, but it definitely makes more sense with the proper reading of "meets" (and I can see better where they got "Reunion" from now).

I didn't bring OP to work with me today (let us not discuss how often I have actually done that, but today is my busy/long day and I told myself I wouldn't have time...) so I will have to check the translation bits when I get home. I'm wondering now if Viz translated mayuge as eyelashes or eyebrow - they might well have got it right and I just missed it. (Gotta say, Eyebrow-bro just doesn't have the same ring.)

Did Viz not do the different font? Sad!

It was just a smaller font. Maybe it's just me, but looking at the Japanese version made me laugh harder.

Forget Lucci, I'm slashing the pigeon.

...with the mouse?I thought about that, but the mouse deserves ( ... )

No, but it makes more sense, given that it's Sanji we're talking about. (Does he even HAVE eyelashes?)

I'm afraid he would be a mean seme.

Probably.

Certainly just about EVERYONE around Spandam is funnier and cuter than he is.

Hmm, less annoying, yes, but we're going to meet people I find just as un-funny and un-cute as Spandam.

It'll be interesting to have that conversation when we get there, because I have been finding... certain characters... much funnier and less annoying than I remembered. Maybe I just haven't been (re)exposed to enough of them yet.

Ack, I totally forgot to mention one very brief but oh so effective line, Luffy just after he's made it out of the Lower City in time and reunited with Nami, Zoro and Chopper: "Where's Sanji and U... Where's Sanji?" ;_;

Aw, you're right! How did I leave that line out? I loved that, too. Poor Luffy. ;__;

Her one wish was that the six Strawhats, apart from herself, be permitted to leave the island unharmed.

The wish that couldn't be fulfilled if she stayed with them. *sobs forever*

We were having a huge discussion about this line in the comments to Volume 36

I should go back and read that. The problem with spoilers and me being 22 volumes behind is I don't know which ones are safe ever.

I love all the shipwrights gaping at the fact that the reindeer turned into a tanuki

I wish Viz wouldn't translate this as "raccoon."

They're still doing it three pages later.

I carelessly missed that. Bah! I spot the mouse in every scene but miss a whole panel? Anyway, I love how sweet the whispered call for Usopp is when Chopper does it, and how Oda makes it instantly hilarious by having the shipwrights mimic it blindly.

Lucci comments that he has no regrets about leaving Water 7 behind, though it's been his home for five years.

YOU SUCK, ROB LUCCI. (But the pigeon wearing a Lucci coat is hilarious.)

"Hang on, the first part's just a useless ( ... )

I KNOWWWWW T_T

Wearing his bandana from Tom's Workers. I love you, Iceberg. Stop trying to kill Robin.

Yes! I think I originally meant to mention that but forgot. I really love the bandana touch.

It's okay, he promises never to do it again.

I do not understand this conversation. What's the 108?

Zoro has a bunch of attacks that are either Buddhist puns, jokes about food, or both. (Mostly both.) One of them is the 108-pound cannon, which according to the wikia (I had to look to refresh my memory) refers to the 108 Earthly Desires and involves a really complicated pun playing on the word for "earthly desires," the word for cannon and the word for phoenix. He first used it to defeat Ohm on Skypiea (vol 29), and I think I talked about the pun there. Anyway, Luffy means that them teaming up will double the power of the attack, since Zoro's 108 pound cannon and his gomu-gomu no cannon apparently have roughly the same power.

This is the relevant thread. I went and read through it again - there are a couple of minor spoilers for stuff later in Enies Lobby, but I think it's generally safe for you to read even if you haven't got past 38. It will be extra safe once we get through the end of vol 44.

Okay, I went back and read everything that wasn't protected with Enies Lobby warnings (and there was one spoiler I haven't encountered, but not a major one). I concede Sanji's line is condescending and sexist, but it's just not scraping me as strongly as the rest of you. Maybe because he was saying it to comfort Chopper? (And my cuddlism re: Chopper may be as bad as Sanji's sexism.) Though I am glad Zoro and not Sanji is raising Chopper.
