Sogeking = BEST EVER. Nobody will ever convince me otherwise.
"Don't you want to know where Sniper Island is?" *ignore* *ignore* "It's in your heart!" *ignore*
Chopper wants to know where Sniper Island is. Sogeking: "It's in your heart!"
SO much love for this. I want to like, write an essay about how much I love this, only it would just be pages of me laughing. But Luffy + Chopper + Usopp Sogeking interactions = PERFECT.
Has anyone ever done a "most annoying One Piece villain" list? This guy is way up toward the top of mine.
I think he's at the very top of mine (and I haven't even heard his voice!). However: I admit that the "Men's Formal Wear" joke is funny, I like that Sanji uses knives on him (because food), and his transformation/reaction ("give me back my individuality!") makes me laugh.
[Sabaody]Also: I love the introduction of Sanji's cosmetic surgery(?). To be honest, I missed this link to Duval's transformation later, so I'm glad you pointed it out

His voice is the FIRST thing I remember about him. >.< God in heaven, so irritating. But it kind of cracks me up that whoever posted that video listed it as "one of my favorite" funny scenes in One Piece. Tastes differ, evidently.
[Marineford] Luffy tries to ask politely to be allowed to pass (who on earth taught him that?)
Is this part of Ace's polite greetings?
I wish I knew! There isn't much evidence of those lessons taking, otherwise.
(Ace's politeness, and the reason for it, is one of those things that will never not get to me. Ace! ;__;)
[Marineford] Ace's politeness, and the reason for it, is one of those things that will never not get to me. Ace!
I know! (Likewise: thinking for so long that Ace's tattoo was a joke about Ace not being able to spell.) Honestly, I'll never get past the fact that Oda waited SIXTY VOLUMES to give us Luffy's tragic backstory. And why wasn't I expecting it? All of the Strawhats have one! Why would I think Luffy was the exception?? So sideswiped by that one. ;_;
(edited to fix tag, even though I guess it was working even with the typo)
[Marineford]I kind of figured Luffy had his tragic backstory at the very beginning, with Shanks losing his arm. But hey, he's the lead, so why shouldn't we have TWICE the heartbreak for him? >.<
God damn, I love this little sea train mini-arc. I even love the initial landing on Enies Lobby, where the Strawhats' 50-odd allies all go out and kick some serious ass. Seeing *spoiler* turn *spoiler* and *spoiler* around by referencing something that happened hundreds of chapters ago was great, too

True, the fights are dull (then again, I almost always find fights dull), but volume 41 is amazing (and heartbreaking and amazing).
[Thriller Bark (just in case)] I know what you mean about both Franky and Brook. I mean, I love Franky, but mostly as comic relief; despite his tragic backstory, he's not yet a fully developed character to me. And Brook just kind of baffles me, although I love him for Laboon's sake.
I do suspect that Brook, at least, is likely to get more development (we know almost nothing about his life as a human, whereas we have childhood stories for every other character). And I'm expecting to see Franky get more character development, too, maybe along the lines of what Usopp got during Water 7. We still know so little about his background before Tom adopted him.
I look forward to the Detective Conan recaps! Hopefully I can keep up. My Japanese isn't the greatest when it comes to puns, but I will do my best to weigh in with Japanese comments. (I forget, do you read Japanese?)
I can't really read Japanese, but I do recognize a lot of kanji because I'm Chinese. Sometimes, I really wonder if I should volunteer for the online Detective Conan translations - most of the time, the Chinese fanbase will have the latest chapter translated into Chinese within a day.
I'm fairly good at reading Chinese - even if there are characters I can't recognize, I can generally figure it out from the context. Katakana leaves me totally lost, though, which is rather unfortunate, since Conan puts a lot of emphasis on codes, alternate pronunciations, and foreign languages.
Ah, well. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. I do hope that you'll enjoy the ride.
I really like this volume, and yet, I find that I can't come up with anything new to add here! It feels like you handled all the bases already... Maybe something will occur to me later on.
Usopp tells Robin that it's OK. "You're still hiding something, aren't you? That doesn't matter." Pirates, he tells her, can't leave the crew without the captain's permission. "Believe in Luffy!"
[Aw. Hypocrisy, maybe, but I like to think Usopp is trying to give Robin the advice he wishes he'd given himself. It may be significant that he *doesn't* call Luffy "Luffy-kun" here.]
Yeah, I think it's more that than hyopcrisy. He tells her this because it's what he wishes he would have adhered to, and it's not too late for her (as he fears it is for him).
In the translations I've seen Usopp drops the courteous Sogeking way of speaking here and reverts to normal Usopp-speech. He did so earlier too when he was alone with Robin in the other car and got worked up over her refusing to sneak away with him. I assume that was why in the anime, his voice actor also returned to his normal Usopp voice right there instead of the consciously deeper Sogeking voice, which seems like a good choice.

Oh, nice touch. I really need to rewatch the Water 7/Enies Lobby anime all the way through again with the benefit of hindsight; it seems like they did so many things well.
(For the record, I have 41 pretty-much-finished, but am holding off on posting it until I get my article in. I haven't started 42, but I'm hoping the next couple of volumes will go quickly on account of shounen fighting boredom.)
Hrm…Luffy or Chopper? Oh, BOTH!
I agree with w_10_00: Luffy + Chopper + Sogeking = BEST THING EVER
And that would be trivial…if I remembered what each of those is. He's got Kaku-walking and kick-slicing. And iron body? He doesn't have finger guns.
We see him using Kaku-walking (geppou = moonwalk) and rankyaku (kick-slicing). I don't think we see him using kamie (avoidance) or soru (super fast motion). And he doesn't have iron body (tekkai), or, as you say, finger-gun (shigan).
It's gotten to the point where, sadly, I find the Japanese names of the techniques easier to remember.
Weird.
For all his faults, Lucci seems to be a stickler for following orders, and he knows the government made a deal with Robin. Not that that makes me like him any better.

See, Sanji? Bad white knight fantasy!

Lucci tells the others not to kill any of the Strawhats - that was the promise.
Weird. (Still hate you, Rob Lucci. You hurt Paulie.)
[The SBS explains how Zoro ended up in the chimney, LOL forever.]
…I kinda wish he had gotten "lost" while trying to get up the roof or chimney.
So much love for Franky here. I love that he makes the connection with what Tom tried to teach him.
Me too!
