Tom pulled his knees up to his chest, uncomfortable in the tiny sitting room. "I really don't see why I had to come along," he muttered, keeping his head low so it wouldn't brush against the ceiling. "You should have brought Doc, instead."
"Don't be silly," Sarah whispered, giving her brother a good-natured poke in the side. "He'd never fit in here, with his bad back, and Miss Maple was insistent that I bring a guest."
"You could have brought--" But Tom cut off his protests when their host entered the room. She beamed up at them with beady black eyes and offered each a tiny teacup. "I'm sorry I don't have anything bigger," she apologized, words whistling through her buck teeth. "I'm so happy you came to visit!"
Tom wondered, yet again, how Sarah talked him into having tea with a groundhog. His sister always seemed to get into the strangest circumstances.
There weren't too many children April's age in the City, but there were playgrounds, including a rather nice one right by the community gardens. Tom kept an eye on her while she played, but she seemed to be having fun on her own
