so i lost in tennis--twice. the first time i had a partner and he was willing to take the blame.

but today, i had only myself to take credit for such a loss.

Would you like to know why you established those leads (i'm strictly guessing here :-) )...it is because he didn't want to make you feel bad by beating you too badly. He knew that by blowing you out of the water, which could've been possible, could injure one's tennis ego. So therefore, compassionate as he was, he gave you mercy games. Now that is chivalry of the highest degree.
