Question for anyone knowledgable about The Railways.

Assuming that there's someone other than Poggs who reads this and fits the profile. :0)

At what point in their history would British Rail(ways) use a 'BR' logo rather than the full crest or the arrows thingie?

Let me ask Not-My-Boyfriend, who's writing a book on British Rail design history! :)

all right, here's the story:

the double arrow design was introduced to uniforms in 1965. these BR buttons replaced buttons that had some sort of stylised wheel on them beforehand, and these BR buttons - which completely break with design conventions of BR, i'm not sure why - came into use in 1960. BR tended to use stock until it ran out, and this button was probably in use from 1960 or 61 to as late as 1968, simply because they still had some kicking around.

i showed him the picture and he wistfully said "oh yeah, those are beautiful," and i know he doesn't have one, so if you're getting rid of it let me know, i'll have it!

I'd suspect that this was from the period 1948-1955 - according to the BR Wiki the full crest was used from 1955 until the Double Arrow was introduced in the late 'sixties. Although, of course, I could be wrong...

Yup, definitely pre-1955.

Sarah - wander down to Toddington with it, next time you're down at Ma & Pa's. I suspect you'll find someone who'll confirm it as 48-55.

Thanks both for the date confirmation. As to visits to GWR, that's not likely to be for a month or so, so it and its pals are going to the electronic jumble sale this week.

'48 onwards, until replaced by the "Ferret on a Dartboard".

This is no weather to be dismantling overcoats. Quick, put it back on before the snow gets there!

Said overcoat (possibly even heavier than the Meltie-coat) is still firmly attached to No1 un-son, its just that he has a habit of losing buttons. I will be replacing them for him, honest.
