Chapter 1: the face of the devil
The sun disappeared slowly behind the tall skyscrapers as we were about to reach the cinema. The stretch limousine stopped right in front of the red carpet laid out for the cast. On each side of the carpet protective railings were installed and behind them fangirls and gays chatting excitedly to one another.
I sighed wearily at the sight of them. The driver got out of the front and opened the door, revealing my face for the whole world to see. Almost instantly, the loud chatter exploded into hysterical screaming. I resisted scrunching my face at the noise that was deafening my sensitive ears.
“Oh my god! It’s him!”
“It’s actually THE Kim Kibum!”
“I think I’m gonna faint…”
I flashed them a crooked smile, and a collective group of sighs and swoons could be heard. I made my way into the theater, relief washing over me as the racket faded into a quiet hum in the background. Inside, four largely built men instantly covered me from the flashes of the giddy paparazzi. I snorted quietly at the thought of their outraged faces when they saw that there was no person to be seen in their photographs.
I entered into the cinema and took my seat in the row that was reserved for the cast. I waited patiently for my fellow actors and actresses to come when someone tapped me on the shoulder.
‘Stupid guards aren’t doing their job’ I thought irritately.
I turned around to see an old lady. Probably way beyond her eighty’s. Her face was wrinkled like a prune and her fragile frame was clothed in a thick green woolen sweater and a patched brown knitted skirt. On her thin shoulders there was an ugly pink shawl to keep her warm. She looked ordinary, almost too common. She would definitely have given the guards the slip.
“Are you Kim Kibum?” she asked in a hoarse voice that definitely suited her age group.
“Yes” I answered with a smile. ‘No need to scare the old lady’ I thought
A smile broke out on her face. Her wrinkles creased together and a few rotten teeth peeked out from under her smile. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of yellowing paper and what remained of a short stub of a pencil.
“Can I have your autograph?” She requested politely. She held out the two items shakily, waiting for me to receive them.
“Of course” I said. It was when I reached out for the pen and paper the cold skin of my fingers accidentally, brushed lightly against her hand.
The pen and paper dropped onto the carpeted floor. The aged woman stared at me with surprised brown eyes as big as saucers. Her face paled white as a sheet. She seemed frozen in shock for a few moments before the bolts in her rusty head clicked and she darted like a woman in her twenty’s towards the door.
“So much for not scaring her” I mumbled tiredly.
I glanced at my sapphire blue Rolex watch. 8:30 P.M. Still enough time. I stood up and with a small trail of dust, I was gone.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I found her in an alley three blocks away from the theater. For an old lady, she sure can run. I appeared in front of her in a flash, scarring her a leap backward. She stared at me as I walked towards her. I can see myself mirrored perfectly in her frightened brown eyes: messy jet black hair, inhumanely handsome face and eyes as red as hell; the face of the devil.
She was finally backed up against the wall. She opened her mouth but no sound came out. She was exhausted. I can see that in her features even from all the fear. Her brown eyes seemed changed emotions. She’d gone from rebellious to acceptant. Her eyes said ‘Do it quickly’. My heart would have softened for her if it hadn’t been dead for almost a hundred years. I would kill her quickly.
I grasped the then sides of her small head with two hands. With a twist of my wrists and a sickening crack it was over. I let her corpse slink down to the cold ground and went my way. I ran with a quarter of my vampire speed back to the theater five minutes just before the movie started. I seated myself again on my reserved seat and looked as if nothing had happened.
“Where were you?” the girl beside me hissed. She was a beautiful, frost skinned beauty with bullion obsidian eyes and plump red lips.
“ What are you talking about?” I said indifferently, focusing on the credits flashing on the giant cinema screen.
“ You can’t fool me Kim Kibum” she was sharp all right. You see, she was a girl I bit one night when I was out hunting in the streets of Seoul when I was just starting out as a newborn. I drained her and left her in a dark corner thinking she was dead. So you can imagine my surprise when twenty five years later she appeared in my dressing room calling me ‘Master’ and ‘My creator’. She was okay. Actually, she was a kind-hearted vampire and a witty one to boot and the best thing about her is she isn’t clingy! Overtime we developed a strictly platonic relationship and became the best of friends
“Nothing ever gets past you doesn’t it, Dae-soon?” I smirked.
“You got that right!” she said with an arrogant tone. ” You’re lucky that no one else has noticed your red eyes but me” she added jokingly “What would your fangirls do if they knew what you were?
“They’d offer me their blood without even me even asking” I remarked jokingly.
Her wind chime laughter tinkled quietly along our row. The lights dimmed and I tried to relax as the screen started to feature our movie.
