Having heard this from my favourite and completely reliable professor, I said "sayounara" to my idea of a perfect Asian gentleman.

Actually I heard that from my teacher as well...and anytime we go somewhere...he always holds the door...so...where's actually the true?

When I was studying in Japan, men were regularly slamming doors into my face! :D
Anyway, Japanese men from companies I was working for here in the Czech republic are mostly different - they let you go first, hold the door... They only do not know that they should not let you go first to pubs or when walking down the stairs, but mostly I didn't really care to explain them. XD

I agree with all of the comments. It would be great if there were more Japanese men like that. I only know of one and regretably, I only get to opportunity to enjoy his not-so-common-japanese manners whenever I head to San Francisco.

There are few Japanese down here in my town. And they have virtually no manners.
