Torn

Sarah and I have been talking quite a bit about moving back into the city.  I'm really torn.  I love where we live, but the commute is not sustainable.

Moving into town: Pros

  • Shorter commute

  • Cheaper commute, especially as the price of gas continues to climb.  Ideally, I'd like to move within a 30 minute bike ride to Kanata.

How often do you actually relax and enjoy everything you have out there?

"I suppose we could always buy some curtains" lol

Not nearly often enough. I think I missed the "learn how to relax" lesson in life. My thought processes usually work something like this:

I should start this renovation right now because
-In a couple of months there will be a baby and I won't have time or energy
-I can afford it now but won't necessarily be able to later
-The weather is good for this job
-Wouldn't it be nice to just get it done so we can enjoy the results?
-If I leave it any longer it will degrade further
-This really should get done before we try to sell the house
-I already have the (whatever tools) out, why stop here?
-This stage has to get done before I can start on the next stage
etc, etc, etc.

I usually miss the "if I start this now will I end up feeling like a stress ball?" question. Must remember that one more often.

*smile*

Maybe you need to schedule some relaxing time into your agenda?

Seriously, I asked you that question because if one of the points to living there is enjoying it, then it only matters if you do enjoy it.

Maybe there is someone's shop in the city you could share (put your tools in) and have a hobby buddy at the same time? I know someone in Regina who does that.

I'm just now catching up on your journal.

Have you considered buying a condo-type ordinary house in Ottawa, and then buying a cottage (or building on on your parents' land) in a few years? I want a cottage and have been trying to convince some of my friends to buy one with me. We could think about that...
I figure that 3 buyers (a couple counts as one buyer) would be idea cause then each buyer would have 1 weekend per months as their solo weekend, and then the 4th weekend could be a free-for-all or could be scheduled in advance. It could also be rented out to make extra cash. And, in your case, you could store the boat & shop equipment there.

ps: I don't miss my bigger house at all, now that I'm happier in my life's path (even though my house is puny.)
