Bullying is becoming such a huge issue - especially cyber-bullying. As a teacher, I do preach tolerance and respect for everyone. Some years it's not a problem (like this year, thank God), but some years, all it takes is one popular bully to get the whole group acting like a bunch of jerks.
One year, I had an especially stubborn bully, so the principal, parents, the student, and I got together and made a contract that outlined each offense and its consequence. I'm not sure we cured him for life, but he was waaay better for the remainder of fifth grade because he couldn't get away with anything.
Thanks for handling the front line. I think the problem in my school is student accountability. Everyone likes to talk about it, but no one enforces it.
