There are definitely some problems with the Japanese school system: For example, the fact that learning English is mandatory for all kids grades 7th - 12th, simply because it’s on college entrance exams. I dunno if you've heard of it, but Murakami wrote a short story called Tony Takitani that was turned into a movie that just came out (in a very very small run, mind you) over here. Elisha and I saw it on saturday and it was absolutely gorgeous. If it's showing over there I highly recommend seeing it.

And yes, I have heard that Murakami is more popular outside of Japan. I've heard that Europe is actually where he's most popular.
