Weirdly nostalgic

I forgot about the anniversary last year, and I think I belated remembered it the year before... But it was a total accident that I was reminded that today was the five year anniversary of the London tube bombings. Many of you were actually friended to me here on LJ five years ago, and witnessed how LiveJournal turned into one of the only ( Read more... )

See, now I know where all those places are. (well, not Sloan Square, I never went there).

But the required book for my counterterrorism course was The British War on Terror and started with a description of the 7/7 bombings...and I was on my way to St Pancras from the plane and living near Kings Cross and the school was between Liverpool St. and Aldgate (right next to the Gherkin, actually). So we all had moments of "...dude THERE RIGHT THERE."

And then we got over it, because, hey, London.

I feel the same sort of admiration for how Mumbaikers approach things. While it was horrible to watch it was impressive to see how well they dealt with the Mumbai attacks. Sounds like Londoners are made of the same stuff.

This is a cool retrospective. I remember being relieved that day, 5 years ago, when you were OK.

I figure, the city has been sacked/attacked/occupied/bombed/blasted how many times since the Roman invasion...? They must be used to it by now.

A lot of people forget this! When I first started working in London, the threat of an IRA bomb was ever-present, so I guess everyone is kind of used to it (the threat, that is, not the bombing). The bins had disappeared from stations long before 7/7...

My dad's office was quite badly damaged when the IRA bombed the Commercial Union building in the early 90s, and one of the things that people kept mentioning at his funeral was their memories of how he'd gone back to work the next day because there was 'too much to do', even though his building had been decreed unsafe and was supposed to be out of action for months. It's that stiff upper lip, don't you know!
